I have been a regular cyclists for many years and have a trek mountain bike and a carbon road bike. I have had a knee injury recently and not cycled for a few months. I live in the Pennines and the thought of going up some of the hills near me is putting me off cycling so I have decided to get a ebike to help with my recovery. I have a £1000 to spend on a bike and was after some advice on what to get I have looked at the woosh Rio but just above my budget of grand. I can cycle ok on the flat and slight inclines but hills are a struggle at the moment so just need something to give me a little help up hills. I fancy something like the Rio has I sometimes I go off road not serious stuff but not Tarmac. I'm 57 and pretty fit apart from knee which will get better so any advice on a good bike would be helpful I normally cycle around 40 miles when I go out which includes a few hills which is why im wanting a ebike. Do woosh do any refurb bikes ? also need something with a decent battery range.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

Woosh have some very nice rear hub kits which would fit the Trek mountain bike.
If you have the skills to fit one or know somehow who could do it for you it sounds the perfect under budget solution.
You get to keep the bike you like and are used to.

I'd think about converting the Trek. You will get a nice rear wheel hub with a good size battery for well less than a grand. If you buy a kit (have a look at Woosh for a start) it will be plug and play. Buying individual components can tailor the kit more for you, but you run the risk of having to get the soldering iron out.
A rear wheel hub will give you the traction you need on tracks and, with the battery in the frame, a fair weight distribution. It will be pas detection, that is to say the system detects rotation of the peddles to give assist power. If your knee plays up during a ride you can ride home 'one legged' as the pas will fill in the missing power from the duff leg. I know, I've done it.
Whereas all mid drives will be torque sense, so requiring weight on the peddles to give any power.
Installation is mostly bike mechanics, it's easy and there's plenty of help to be had here.

ps crossed with Dave's post.

Hi
Welcome
I think you will struggle with your budget unless you find a second hand one
And for me as well it would have to be mid drive because of the more natural feel and better torque off road because you have ratio selection

If your budget is £1000 I recommend a conversion too.

If it can stretch to £1500 there are a lot more options available, of course, but unless you can find a good second hand e-bike, the sort of thing you're going to get for £1000 won't be as good for what you need it for as a proper MTB with a decent conversion.

+1 for a rear hub kit for your Trek on your budget. As already said, most sub £1000 bikes will be pretty basic spec and come with a fairly small battery (10-12Ah), so will struggle to give the range you want. Woosh offers various battery options with his kits and CS and any help you need are second to none.

Not all mid drives are torque sense mine is pas only

Thanks for all your advice my trek has hydraulic brakes are the woosh kits compatable?
motors with torque sensor like the TSDZ2 don't need hydraulic brake sensors unless you fit a throttle.
motors with cadence sensors should have hydraulic brake sensors fitted for belt and braces.

Ok guys i have decided to convert my trek to a rear wheel hub kit not sure on size yet. So this morning i decided to check if everything would fit before ordering a kit. I found my BB is hollowtech and splined. Do i have to fit the PAS for the computer to work correctly if yes no point spending a lot on a system with a fancy comp that wont work. i am not really bothered about the system kicking in when i start pedaling just need the extra push now and again. How have people got round the hollotech / spline issue with a pas? I don't really want to start changing the complete bottom bracket if i don't have to.

it's easy to fit a PAS to a hollowtech bottom bracket.
You only need a magnet disc that is drilled so it will fit around the right side ballbearing.
The kit comes with the correct parts and fitting instructions.

I have had hollowtech BB on five bikes and no issue with fitting a modded Mag ring you just need to think how you fix the mag ring in place.

Finished bike managed to mount battery on vertical tube so still got bottle holder. Everything fitted mag switches on hydraulic brakes and PAS.
Only had time for a quick ride round block but well impressed so far.4FAC23D1-4D6F-48EE-A255-22E33C71F6C5.png
