Here comes the Snow

I had minus -29C last morning.

Not in Britain, surely? Are you in China at the moment?

Went to the Pub Saturday night. 9.00pm, not a drop of snow and barely a wisp of sleet in the air. I didn't think it would come to much. Left the pub at 12.15, it was 4 inches deep and really tipping it down. My bike was almost invisible in a snow drift. Managed a fairly impressive wheel spin/burn out on the throttle as I left the car park, and had a surprisingly uneventful trip home. I just remember thinking "don't touch the brakes". With my mega headlight on it was just like entering Hyperspace in Star Wars as the snowflakes appeared to zoom up at great speed.

I was a little concerned about the huge swathe of slushy stuff that splatted everywhere, but no problems encountered. It was certainly very bracing at that time of night, complete silence, everything white, quite eerie!

We had about 10cm of snow on Saturday night and while much had melted there was still some quite thick patches on my route to work this morning. Ideal time to try out a set of Marathon winter studded tyres I'd purchased a few months ago.

I did skid about more than I was expecting but to be honest I don't think any tyres could have really helped much given the thickness and consistency of the snow. Despite the skidding I quite enjoyed the ride to work and I did manage to get there without falling off!

I think the tyres are really designed to cope with ice rather than thick snow - Looking at the forecast it looks like I'll be testing this soon!

Snow just started falling in Barry , will soon work it`s way up the M4 to London as everything does !

I thought we might not have any snow this year as it's been so mild for the time of year.. we got a fair bit here in the Midlands but its turned to slush now.

Well indeed it was seriously icy this morning for my ride in so I was able to try out the Marathon winter tyres in the kind of conditions they were designed for. Despite my use of studded tyres (which worked brilliantly) I still didn't feel at all safe mainly because of the other nutters on the road.

I rode in the snow!!

Yesterday super cautious morphix took life in his own hands and rode in the SNOW! Woooo. Well I ride the bus route lane to sorting office and I expected it to be clear, and it was mostly. Dodging lines of snow was fun...but the pavements oh lord..I was sliding around all over the place my wheel was just spinning! I had to use my feet like stabilisers and crawl along

Yes, once the pavement snow is trodden down, the ice is far worse than the snow. The large concrete area outside my garages is like that, a big undulating ice rink.

Although I have "Liked" this I am not sure I do! ... Now that you have survived can I suggest that you DON'T DO IT AGAIN! .... whats going to happen to the CycleCharge if you end up in a spill? There are certain members who are just too precious.

I also came off in the ice.
Comical more than anything. It was right at the start of my journey in a busy area in Birmingham.

I slid on top on the bike after low siding. I skidded past an old couple, a woman on her run to work and stopped by a promotional girl handing out flyers for Gatecrasher in Birmingham.

They asked if I was ok. I was I landed on the bike and used it as a sledge.

The Promo girl also asked if I wanted VIP tickets since I made her laugh.

I put my Marathon Winters on yesterday as I needed the bike today, I managed to break two unbreakable super tough tyre levers in the process.
Next time I must remember to bring all wheels, tyres and tools indoors for a while to warm up before I swap them over.

I found thumbs were sufficient to fit mine and I didn't really have any troubles except that I cut my hands as I forgot about the studs!

It was indoors though - much to my wife's annoyance! I guess the type of rims might make a difference to how easy they are to fit too.

It was very icy again this morning. The snow from last night had already been compacted and converted to ice by the few cars using the country roads. I only really realised how slippery it was when I put my foot down to stop and let someone past. I couldn't get any traction with my foot at all! I'm now totally sold on the Marathon Winters.

I've had that in the past, tried to stop the bike but unable to put my foot down. If it gets bad here then I now have studded shoe soles I can use, at the moment it's dry on the roads.
