Hello People!

I have a 1000w 48v conversion kit for my bike which I was running with 4 x 12v lead acid batteries.. this worked really well for me for a few months but my bike was very heavy... so I bought a 48v lithium ion battery to reduce the weight and performance... Problem is, when i tried to connect it, its sparked and I had to pull the connecting points apart before they melted... does anybody know what the problem could be?? not sure how to figure this one out.. any dialogue would be massively appreciated..

Cheers , Dave :)

it seems to me that your controller has blown.

There's no problem at all. That's normal. It's a big spark caused by inrush into the main capacitors, which charge up instantly. The spark normally goes with a snap noise. It can be a bit frightening the first time you do it.

You also get a big spark if you connect the battery wires the wrong way round, but that tends to blow the connector apart and leaves you with black copper oxide all over your hands.

If you have to connect your battery frequently, it's a good idea to use some sort of inrush control to lengthen the life of the connector. You can use a pre-charge resistor or buils an electronic on/off switch.
