Hi guys,

im in the process of disassembling a 48v UPP ebike battery and I have come A little bit stuck.

The way they have combined the cells together is an absolute joke. They are literally super glued together, so every time you carefully pry a cell out to disconnect the protective wrap just peels off exposing the shoulders of the battery and as you can see there's millimetres to work with, I am getting a little spark when the excess nickel (WHICH IS DOUBLE WELDED & THE STRONGEST SH** I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS ) touches other bits or excess nickel.

I have mini nippers too but even they are shorting as the gap in between the welds are minuscule.

Ive added some photos. Do you guys have any ideas
?

Thank you

it is protected when I'm not looking at it

Doesn't help that the packs at full voltage too.. That was my mistake.

Sadly a mass produced poor battery build, simply gluing cells together isn't acceptable for a decent built battery, for separation, nowhere for any heat to disperse between cell to cell contact except to the next cell.
Tbh the fact it is fully charged matters not really.
When the welds are tough / strong one can try using a stout wooden or plastic tool to try and lever up the buss in between the cells and hope to create and a small arc in the metal and use small snips to cut the buss , if one uses a flat wooden tool one can leave it in place slid under the buss and then try using a dremel & disc to cut thru.
Any sparking will only occur from the positive cell with the insulator ring , try and slide the wooden flat tool /strip under the Buss and cut the buss over the insulator ring then when the cell is removed no metal is left thta can contact centre + to the can - edge.
Leaving the wooden strip in place to prevent metal to metal contact.
Nothing one can do about the glue simply one will have to renew the wraps.

If the indvidual bits of buss are that well welded down then one will have to painstakingly grind them off with a dremel tool, if you try and pull pry them off with pliers all that will happen is you will distort/ create uneveness on the cell ends making new spot welds tricky.
Make sure one wears gloves and eye wear when if dremelling, it will be a pain sataking slow job.

I would, not that I would mess with a UPP battery, assume you have fire plan in place, an appropriate large fire extinguisher & a fire proof zone (a kitchen is not ideal surely) away from things until of such times the fire service can help. In all fairness I wouldn't know what to do if that had a mishap. Metal tank (skip) of water?? It would be getting it in there if the worse case did happen.

Fire is unlikely dismantling unless one was really silly and used a metal tool and dropped it across the battery shorting cells out . For a fire it needs something more dramatic to occur usually a charge or discharge fault or major impact.
I have deliberately punctured old cells and not seen fire, venting is the first sign that occurs a pungent not very nice aroma.I have shot some with a .177 air rifle and a bit of fizzing/smoke occurs but had no real flames.

That said one should have back up plan in place as one can not guarantee that which may or may not occur. A large tub dusbin wtaer filled would be my go to scanario and work outdoors.

I woukd start my nippers on the negaive ends where there is no shirt circuit danger, Try to free enough strip so it can be rolled off the cell with needlenose pliers.

It's probably niclel plated steel, knowing UPP. If it starts pulling the steel of the cell outward, you might be out of luck.
