I am not shouting hallelujah before seeing a helmet but it sounds more reasonable
Bah humbug, helmets I just got away from the Aussie nanny state insisting on wearing helmets on bicycles. You don't want helmets at 45deg with your own personal accompaniment of half-dozen flies, one more great thing about being back in GB. No-one ever heard of wearing a helmet on bicycles when I was a boy, never heard of any accidents with serious head injuries either then. You can't legislate for stupidity.

An s-pedelec is not a bike it is a moped that goes 45 km/h under power. For the moment in France that means wearing a motorbike helmet, while pedalling... I can't see why you disliked my post about a potential better solution for s-pedelec riders? Please explain. Remember we are not in a thread about bicycles here.

I have taken to wearing a helmet of late not because of safety issues (OK Asian wasps are a bit of a risk) but because it protects from the sun and is cooler and less sweaty than a cap with a nice airflow over the skull. We only do 38° in the shade in the Basque Country, it isn't Australia.

This statement is correct you never heard of them that is the only difference.

I had 2 people I was at school with back in that era that ended up in hospital with head and other injuries, one for a few months!
A well designed helmet is actually a benefit in hot weather from my experience as it stops all the sweat dropping into you eyes as the headband catches it.
A well designed helmet will also allow very good air flow to cool and shade your head.

It should be a simple choice for an adult to make, not legislated by a bunch of incompetents who have probably not been on a bike for 30 years. It's a good point about 45mph mopeds though, but once again it should be a choice for said adult. At those speeds I would probably choose to wear one as well. The whole point is CHOICE.
Kiwi-Still not sure how the ratings thing works on this forum - removed it.

Thanks.

When the weather cools down a bit I will wear my helmet less, I tend to wear a thick wool felt dockers cap during the cooler season. Except on the open road on the other side of the frontier where there is a 200€ fine for not wearing a helmet...

Like I have said many times on this forum the only helmets I believe in for security are full face, just look at the recent photo of Sir Richard after his accident to see why. The current legislation in France for s-pedelecs requiring a motorbike helmet is ridiculous, even dangerous. It is the principle reason I didn't take out a loan and buy an s-pedelec in the first place.

Kiwi- Just had a look where you are-nice part of the country, just on the border with Spain. After we left Aussie we almost came to live just South of Bordeaux, which is a part I really love, but family ties brought us back to (not so) sunny Bournemouth.
Cheers, Tony.

We say here "I live in the northern part of the Basque Country", Spain starts near Burgos and France on the other side of the Adour... :D I ride often in hegoalde (the south) where the Basque Government hasn't done away with Spanish helmet law :(

That's kph for mopeds, actually 28 mph. A bit on the high side in bicycle terms for the bicycle based S class, but not an uncommon downhill cycling speed so a helmet should still be personal choice in my view.

Trouble is legislators would never agree to a split of moped/bicycle compulsion/voluntary at the same speed. I can't see how The Netherlands government can make one law for the S class and another for mopeds at the same speed. The latter are bound to kick up a fuss sooner or later.
