Hi All,

We've just purchased a couple of electric bikes from the people at e-ranger.co.uk. We are blown away with them - its like cycling in Holland!! Two features we love: The pedal assist and the fact that when you push off from stand-still you can use the throttle to get you up to speed.

One problem though: Sore coccyx!! A factor may probably be that I haven't cycled for a few years. The saddle seems reasonably wide and cushioned but does not feature visible springs at the back end.

Do I need a different saddle? If so, can you recommend a more comfortable alternative?

Many thanks.

Hello and welcome. Sadly with saddles it's a personal feel. I ended up with a leather saddle from Spa cycles, which is still rock hard after 3000 miles, and has no springs, but is the comfiest saddle i've ever owned. May be worth a trip to a bike shop and see if they have some you can try, worth noting too that extra padding or gel doesn't necessarily give you greater comfort.

Welcome Dan.
Sometimes the slightest adjustment to seat angle makes a massive difference, also handlebar height, reach and angle can play a bigger part than you might think and helps to balance your fore and aft weight.
It's not an exact science and worth taking tools to adjust them out on a ride with you and try changing things on the fly.
I would run a mile from that saddle but as John says, we all have different needs. Soft isn't always the answer, though a good quality suspension seat post can help a lot.

Dave.

Hi Dave & John, Many thanks for your advise. I had a feeling the answer would not be straight forward, as you say, we're all different. As an experiment, I've swapped the saddle with an old one from my old conventional bike and will see (feel) if that's better or worse and report back. I'll also search the web to see if there is any consensus on comfortable saddles for ebikes. Are there any websites you could recommend?
Cheers.

I think it's pretty common complaint, you could chase around for ages but not find what you are looking for, sometimes you have to give some time to get used it.

Good luck!

Hello. welcome to the forum. As has been said above saddles are very personal and it could take some time to find one that suits you. If the height of the seat is correct, try tilting the saddle down very slightly.this sometimes works. Or try tilting it slightly up if that fails. Some shops do give you the chance to try saddles for on the understanding that you can change them for another if it doesn't suit.

Hi Clara, Thanks for the advise. I'll minimally tweek it to see if I feel any improvements. The tail end is still pretty sore and on one hand I think I need to rest it to let it recover. On the other hand I want to play with my new toy!..
Best regards.
