Has anyone tried phoning their car rescue service for an electric bike breakdown?

Just a thought. In the event of a leccy bike break down, I wonder if the vehicle rescue services would come to your assistance?

We used to ride motorbikes and Brittania Rescue had no problems with taking us home in the event of a puncture. We are covered for any vehicle that we ride/drive so, given that it would be next to impossible for us to ride home on a broken e-bike without battery power, I wonder if they'd oblige?

Looked into this with the AA & it was a no-no, This is from their Ts & Cs:-

Vehicle specifications
Breakdown assistance is only available for cars, vans, minibuses or motorcycles (including quads and trikes) which meet the specifications set out below.

Please note that “car, van, minibus or motorcycle” does not include, amongst other things, electric pavement vehicles, electrical wheelchairs, bicycles (including electric bicycles), any vehicle which cannot lawfully be used on the public highway and/or any non-motorised vehicle.

Maximum Vehicle Weight: 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) gross vehicle weight
Maximum Vehicle Width: 7ft 6in (2.3m) which constitutes the overall width of the vehicle bodywork excluding mirrors, measured at the widest points.

Assistance will also be provided for a caravan or trailer which was on tow at the time of the breakdown, provided that it falls within the above limits. For the avoidance of doubt, we do cover electric cars, vans, minibuses and motorcycles

Blimey, they closed that loophole quickly didn't they? I'll have to take a look at Brittania Rescue's T&Cs. They tend to be a bit more relaxed about things than the AA and RAC so you never know.

I've recently come across Lexham who offer breakdown assistance with electric bike insurance.
Their breakdown covers irreparable damage to the bike so I don't think they'd recover you for a flat battery or some sort of electrical problem say. looks like they are covering accident damage rather than break downs (might have read it wrong but that's how I interpret it.)
Just for information, the cost for my bike alone would be £79 p/a. Not a bad cost, but I'm not interested in insuring the bike against theft. It is covered by my house insurance at home, and never out of my sight when outside!

Interestingly..
My bike cost £3000 3 years ago so is probably only worth a few hundred pounds now, so if I add in £200 for value and then 1 to 2 million for increased public liability it comes in at £16.72 per year.
Good value there if you dont need the theft or breakdown... I think!

If I use it just for the breakdown cover, by stating the bike value at the cheapest (£200), it comes to £22 for the year. Good for peace of mind.
Hubby has a lighter bike than mine and would be able to ride home without electrics, but mine would be too heavy for me.
I think it may be worth buying the insurance at least for my bike, so thanks for the suggestion Bob:D
