Has anyone made a bike with two motors one for torq and one for speed? say one hub motor thats low rpm with huge torq for hills then when you got to the top you could switch power to the other higher rpm motor for the flat bits, or is this a stupid idea? or what about a 2 speed motor that does both ?

you only need a crank drive.
For torque, change to a low gear, for speed, change to a high gear.
Still, it's the raw power that counts. More power equals more flexibility.
You should also want a throttle to rest your legs though.

I've used every combination of motors including a low-spped front with high-speed rear. You don't need to run them one at a time. The efficiency is still quite good using them together. After 18 mph, the low-speed one maxes out and the other takes over. Use both when hill-climbing for maximum torque. You need a battery capable of giving more than 30 amps, so you can't do it with your average rack or bottle battery.

There's also the two-speed Xiongda motor that changes automatically to high-speed at around 12 mph. It has two different output gears and a double clutch arrangement.

Is anyone importing the two-speed motor for resale yet?

it's about time that one of us should stock spares - how about this idea? we ask d8veh to turn his bike shed into community e-bike village shop. Each time we buy something from China, we buy a few more bits to lower the average air freight and leave unused parts in his shed. If a member needs something, he can pay for cost + small donation for the upkeep of the shed. Money paid can be kept on account and used against purchases.

For a paid up ebike club, it would be a great idea. 2CVGB have a spare part owners group (SPOG) which has gradually become a commissioning group for hard to get spare parts. Indeed, they are now the only source for some spare parts for 2CV's.
For a non contributory (money wise) group such as ours - not sure how it would work:confused:

There's an opportunity here for one of the bike shops (or anyone else) to set up a user club with a membership fee of £10 per year, which would get you access to a list of spare parts (the list would be published, and would improve over time).

The big problem would be - someone buys a motor from the club, and it doesn't work (or he thinks it doesn't). Who pays?

there should not be any warranty, same as if you were to import yourself.
Also, if you hand over to the club your unused parts, then you would have already paid membership fees.

As Trex says just get a crank drive. I don't agree that e-bikes should have a throttle though, if you want to just sit there on a bike, buy a scooter.
