Hi Folks,
I added a Bafang 8-FUN to my current tadpole trike and while it was successful there were issues with the hybrid Sturmey Archer 3 x 8 hub whereby the pawls in the 3-speed element would keep slipping under load/power.

I am building a new trike and I intend to move the BAFANG unit to it.
While an Internal 8-Spd hub will be much simpler I am obviously concerned that the hub might also suffer from slipping pawls.

Has anyone out there got an SA 8spd hub ebike, and how well does it perform?

TIA,

Dan

I've an unused Nuvinci N360 that you can have for a reasonable price if you want to try one. It's about 1kg heavier than the SA. I have one on one of my bikes that has A GNG crank motor that goes up to 30 amps, so it'll be no problem with a BBS01, and they use them on a few OEM bikes with Bosch motors.

I think the Sunrace Sturmey 8 speed hub might not be a good choice with a crank unit.

The reason is it's odd design, bottom gear being direct drive and all the remaining gears up from that. That means it has to have a relatively small chainwheel and a large rear sprocket for the gear range not to go far too high. Having a small enough chainwheel might be a problem with some crank units, but I don't know about the Bafang ones.

The designer's thinking was to have the highest efficiencies in the low gears for climbing. Other makes have the direct drive roughly in the middle of the range.

Hi Dave :)

How are you mate?
I am in a bad way here. That little spill I had? Turns out I have severed the tendon of my subscapularis muscle (ripped it right off the shoulder). Needs open surgery to fix it. No biking for a while///4..6 weeks in a sling then 6 months of physio.

Can you quantify the term "Reasonable Price" for a Nuvinci for me? I may very well be interested. Does it come with shifter etc?

Sorry to hear that; however, I'm hard as nails. A sob story won't make me reduce the price. I'll call you later after I've dug it out. If I write the price here, they'all be fighting for it.

All manufacturers supply the correct gear ratios to respect in order to stop their hubs from being too stressed. Rohloff being at the top end of the scale.

On the Bafang you can go down to 36 teeth before things become too weird.

LOL I wasn't seeking any reductions David.
The two things are/were not connected in my mind (your reply made me spit my drink out though).

I was however alerting you to my current status because next time you were down we were going to go for a jolly-jaunt together, and this may not be possible now. Hope to hear from you soon.
