hi everyone I found this site while trying to find an answer to my problem. I have had my bike for about 18 months now and started having problems about 9 months ago. I assumed it was the battery at fault but Bh bikes have checked it and said it is ok. I went out today and cycled up a steep hill for about 3 kms but had the same problem. Although I still had 3 bars remaining on the battery it cut out. After stopping for a few minutes I could start again but it cut out again almost immediately. This happened 5 times in quick succession. I now think it might not be the battery at fault but possibly the motor. Once I got over the mountain and down the other side, no problem. It only happened once before on level ground but I was struggling against a very strong wind. Can anyone help Cheers Sikajeth

They've used a variety of motors previously and are currently using Bosch, Panasonic and Shimano STEPS.

Can you tell up which motor you have Sikajeth?

When your battery was checked do you know what fault they checked for ?
Any one can do simple fault test to see that it charges up to 42v but if there are some duff cells this may cause the bms to shut down because of low volts.

Hi, I can't find a make anywhere but it is a rear mounted geared hub 350 watt. It is a neo city which has now been discontinued so can't check on specs. Didn't come with proper manual, bought in Spain. Will check with Bh bikes tomorrow. Maybe the motor isn't good enough to be under pressure up steep hills?

Battery was sent back to Bh bikes in Spain and I have the results which gives a reading of between 4150 and 4162 in each of 10 cells. Also Soc 97% and psoh 95% if that is any help

Hi, I can't find a make anywhere
Thanks for looking Sikajeth. Now you've told me it the Neo City model, that tells me it has the Japanese Dapu 350 watt motor.

Other than the battery, the only suggestion I have is a sub-standard connection in the current feed to the motor, since that can cause supply failure under high load. This could be between the battery and controller or in one of the three phase leads between the controller and motor. If there are any connectors in those paths, try unplugging and replugging to ensure the connections are sound.

Others will probably have further suggestions as well.

Some Neo Cities had the Bafang BPM motor, but whatever motor it is, I doubt that there's anything wrong with it. There's not really anything that can give those symptoms. Nine out of ten times, its the battery and one out of ten times, the controller.

When you go back downhill, does it all come back to normal and continud OK as long as you don't go up steep hills?

The city has the clip on (removable)display, control panel.
They can have dodgy contacts and report flat batteries or communication faults.
It's usually best to use the screw to attach it and leave it on.

I have just returned after a bike ride and for the first time I have had the same problem on fairly level ground as I did going up hills. The motor cut out 5 times and only went for a few minutes in between. I had done about 20 miles and still had 2 bars left. Whatever the problem it is definitely getting worse!!
