A few weeks ago I posted about buying a converted Dahon Ciao from CH Whites in Malmesbury. In my original communication with Tim from CH White I had enquired about the availability of a MU conversion, but was told that this wasn't planned at the time due to problems with the location of the control box. As a result, with some misgivings went ahead & bought the Ciao.

Shortly after, CH Whites did in fact find a way to mount the control box and the MU is now advertised on their web-site. To cut a long story short, after a flurry of emails with Tim, CH White agreed to make an exchange with the Ciao on very reasonable terms, considering I had been using it to commute to work. The MU conversion arrived on Christmas Eve & in my view is a lovely bike, well styled with a neatly installed motor and battery unit. I took it for a longish ride yesterday & found it a real pleasure to ride. The Ciao is a decent bike but at the end of day it depends on what you want & it wasn't really the bike for me.

Having read about the poor customer service on these pages from some firms, I just wanted to say how helpful and responsive CH White's and Tim especially has been throughout all of this. Even though it's early days for them in the somewhat precarious field of electric (folding) bikes, I reckon that they deserve to succeed. It's also nice to have a bike which I reckon compares well to Rooel's Dahon Speed conversion and should give some decent years service!

As at the time of purchase the only Roo El 2006 I could find was with C H White I bought it by mail order from them and received good service. Living in Scotland too I am pleased to see that, unlike most online retailers, they are willing to extend their free delivery service of bulky goods to the Highlands and Islands etc by using Royal Mail Parcels the only one which charges a standard rate throughout the whole of the UK. Others add hefty and discriminatory surcharges.

C H White are long established in the cycle trade (from 1928) a record which none of the importers of unknown Chinese models can claim.

And the Dahon bikes are also well established, with improvements having been made over a number of years for a decade or so. Being mass produced, and subject only to random inspection, the odd defective one does, however, escape from the factory, and you will be able to read about these on the Dahon forum. Purchase from a reliable dealer is therefore a sensible choice.

I have found the steel framed Speed P8 so far to be sturdy and reliable, and fitted with the Sram Sparc system, good for a comfortable 50 to 60 mile ride (extra batteries in the pannier!) or short trips in the city.
