Got my Bafang motor

Hi everyone,

I just got myself a Bafang geared hub motor delivered from China, along with a controller. This is for a project to build myself another bike. There are some threads discussing this but they are back in the past and a new one won't hurt.

Its a rear wheel version. Here's the right hand side

Here's the left hand side. The thread is normal right hand. I suppose its for fitting a hub brake - does anyone know anything about those, please?

And here is the frame I made for testing it. Observe the way the torque washers fit into the carefully machined dropouts. The white Hammerite wasn't so successful, though.

What I need to do soon is to get it built into a wheel. Can anyone recommend a good LBS for that?

That thread on the other side is for a smooth drum for the band brake that the Chinese seem to favour Nick. Horrible things with steel strap that self wraps and squeals in the forward direction and has no braking effect in reverse. The Quando motor has the vestige of that tarred over, from the days when it too had a band brake.

I don't know Somerset's LBSs, but St Johns Cycles at Bridgewater are good at most things.

Wheel build

SJS have always been very helpful. I've just had a Sram 3x7 laced into a 20" wheel by Tim at Cycle1 in Honiton, Tel:01404 47211. He's a really nice guy and has made a great job-highly recommended.

flecc, Daniel,

Thanks. Between this and the "spokes" thread I should have enough local contacts to sort something out.
