Giving a little back

As some of you know, I'm off to Switzerland in a few days time, and the trip is going to be made all the more special for me, for several reasons. Firstly I'll be spending time with my family, secondly I am taking both KTM's with me, just hoping that a new brake set up arrives in time, and lastly I am doing something in memory for someone that I have never met.

It's a long story that I want bore you with, but basically I had been helping out a keen cyclist/cycle shop owner, to come up with a memorial bench for a dear friend of his. Very sadly he also died last year, so the bench was never made.
We had conversations about Switzerland, and the area that I'm visiting, and he had cycled one particularly tough route, that I have always wanted to do my self.
It recently struck me, that I could do something of my own, and came up with the idea of making a memorial plaque to show the fondness that each shared for the other. I intend to cycle the tough route, place the plaque at the base of the Eiger, crack open a beer for him, watch the sun set and then ride back down the mountain late evening.
Watching the sun go down from the Eiger has been on my bucket list for a very long time, but the lack of evening trains coming down the mountain, has prevented it. Having the bike, now solves this issue. :)

Anyway, with a cycle themed plaque, here is me giving a little back to an unknown man and his friend. :)

(I still need to countersink the screw heads further)

I've just got back from a road trip that took me through Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen. Amazingly beautiful part of the world, and a lovely setting for a lovely tribute.

Many thanks Lardo. I've gained several friends over the years that live in Lauterbrunnen, and it always somehow feels as though I'm going home when I visit.

What was the weather like for your trip?

We were very fortunate, in that it was mid thirties every day. Too hot really, but it made evening cycling a real pleasure.

I need to finish writing about the placing of the memorial plaque, but this was the sunset from that evening. A few things had disappointed me about the evening, but when I came across this, I'd be telling a lie if I said that a tear of happiness didn't well up. It made the whole trip worthwhile. Sadly photos will never do it justice.

I'd describe the weather as perfect! Just over 30 degrees, blue skies, fluffy clouds. It was as perfect a place as I've ever visited!

The little gift shop that would have been behind you when you took the photo, belongs to my friend. :)

Amazing photos. My wife told me to stop dribbling at the Apache. Meiringen is a superb place to both watch and to take aircraft photos from. Sadly Air Glaciers lost a helicopter and pilot on the second day that we were there. :(

Does it really? My wife and daughter were in there when I was taking the photo!

Can't sadly see the superb any more. But yep, I'm a massive fan of the Apache.

Oddly, my favourite helicopter is always going to be the Lama. Having a very scary trip in one persuaded me about just how good that they are. :) What is a shame, is that they are no longer allowed to be used for long line rescue work. Something that the excelled at.

I equally also love the Gazelle and Lynx, but the oddest of all is the Kamov Ka 26 HA-MCB. No idea why though, as you certainly wouldn't get me up in one. :D

Ref the Vulcan. A couple of years ago I worked for an ex Vulcan pilot, who when I showed interest, allowed me to take home a box full of cold war video film footage, with titles such as Hunting Bear. Time had taken it's toll on them though, and the really weren't watchable. :(
