I recently purchased a 2005 Giant Revive Spirit EB. On the rear wheel are attached 2 spoke magnets. It appears that a that a third magnet is missing. There is also a fixed sensor on the swingarm.

I assume that this setup is for the built in cycle computer? Are 3 magnets used for better accuracy?

The cycle computer's display is on but isn't registering speed while pedaling.

I saw online that aftermarket magnets are available.

I don't know of a three magnet system on the Revive Spirit Noel. In our European market where power assist is limited to 15 mph these use a magnet speed sensor on the back wheel to limit to that speed. The magnet can be swung to one side to allow the bike's natural maximum of 18 mph.

I understood that in the USA the magnet wasn't necessary on the model version I know since up to 20 mph assist is allowed in all the States that e-bikes are allowed.

Yours may have a design revision that has three magnets for the speedo display, so it's probably a good idea to replace the missing one to see if that returns it to working.

Hi,
Thanks for your response. Ill purchase an aftermarket magnet and see if that gets the cycle computer to read speed. I wasnt sure if the magnets were for speed or for the the pedelec operation since there were 3 magnets and i thought only one magnet was needed for speed. You sure are right about very little info available re. this bike. This is my first EB, now my Brompton can take a rest!
Thanks! noel

I very much doubt the magnets are for the pedelec operation Noel, since the Panasonic units usually have that carried out internally.

Although the Revive unit had differences, you might find the descriptions in my Panasonic support site of interest to understand how they work. This webpage gives the practical details, and this further link is to the full site.

I liked it too and think it sad that the conservatism of cycling purists rejected it. Truth is it was probably before it's time with it's advanced features and lithium battery in 2004. Maybe a rethink and updated design in the future will earn it the success the general design deserves.
