Giant Fathom E+2... Large

Featured Replies

I, m in process of rebuilding motor in my Haibike Hard 7 (yamaha). Its done 6000 plus miles all off road, crank bearings developed serious play to point of losing chain. (came on very fast, was slight play 3 weeks ago, checked last week... Unrideable...)

Shop said no parts available so new motor £1000..Stripped motor down, needs lots of bits. Bearings, clutch, seals and teeth on drive shaft??? .. So ordered bits that I can...(from performance line bearings, ebike motor specialists) Might be able to restore it (cost around £150). Will keep as a spare.

But decided this bike has done its job so bought a new Giant Fathom E2... Was thinking about a Flyon but at nearly £6k...and heard a few warranty issues. So..

Had Fathom on offer at £2500 new. (James, Rotherham)

First ride today..

28 km.. 350 m climbing in 1hr 24min..

At first didn't think it was as powerful as Haibike. (even tho its same motor) Haibike comes in strong immediately you pedal. The Fathom is more subtle and progressive. Was surprised to see myself climbing faster on it than I would have on Haibike. It definitely supports higher cadence more efficiently than old bike, but old bike does set off on steep climbs easier. On long climbs I, d choose Giant everytime. (but it is on 29s, Haibike was 27.5)

Giant has 600 wh battery (actually 560wh) and I, m convinced with its more subtle power it will easily out range older bike. (which had 400wh)

Both bikes all up weight pretty identical but Giant much heavier battery. And its enclosure much improved over hard7. (battery is integral on Fathom)

New bike handles rough better, is more comfortable (softer forks, bigger tyres) and is equally as secure, if not more so in descents.

Bike comes with tubeless ready rims but has tubes fitted. (shops don't want to be filled with bikes on flat tyres??)

It has no display and works fine without but I, ve down loaded Giant App and all info blue tooths to smart phone. (in a £12 halfords water proof mount/, bag)

App is superb. GPS capability on screen, shows speed etc. Keeps record of route, height, power used (yours and bikes) battery remaining, range remaining..and lots if graphs if desired. Sort of a Strava but specifically for ebike. Worked perfect this morning.

Had bike in highest setting throughout. (can't see point in lower settings or bringing charged batteries home)

But I do try and hover around 15mph to keep range good. (28km,350m climb on 61% battery for a 105kg bloke I think is amazing, averaged around 20km/h)

I was worried I, d never replace Haibike. It's a fantastic bike... But I, d choose this new one every time now I, ve used it. Definitely smoother, better at higher cadence, easier to maintain climb momentum.brakes better and more secure in descents. (probably because stuff is new) So far faultless.

Highly recommend either bike. They are different, even though both hard tails, but ultimately both do a great job.

Just hope it proves as reliable as Haibike..

tubeless sealant evaporates over time as after around 3 months there is nothing left so why they send the bikes out with tubes fitted, did you get any valves in the box ? as then you just need sealant and a decent pump.

i have never had a flat on my bike ;)

No, no valves but no problem. Was under impression tubeless inevitably lose a bit of pressure daily. So bloke in shop reckoned they, d be pumping bikes up all day long once a week if they were all built tubeless. Most folk with tubeless will check them before ride?? Will remove tubes and fit sealant at some stage... Only place I get punctures ic canal banking... No problems if I avoid towpaths... I guess thorns...

Mate runs tubeless, removed his tyres last week, one must have had 15 thorns in... But all sealed... No issues... When I go tubeless will drop pressures to 20 ish. (running 28 at moment) but bike is fine on 28...notice a difference on slightly fatter rims and 2.4 tyres over Haibike on 2.2s...??
