After 10-20 years away from "proper hardware" stuff (I used to design and build circuits in my teens in the 1980s) I want to get back into this.

Other than ebikes my ultimate interests are in renewable/resilient power supplies (a solar/wind powered UPS), radio communications and home automation using PC's...

I know stuff like PCB design is way easier and also circuit design now there is loads of powerful computer software. I have the space and cash for a reasonable workshop.

what sort of stuff should I be purchasing to equip it?

Wish I could help but I just heard a whoosh as that just shot over my head  I wish you good luck in your new projects and look forward to hearing about them :)

Now let me see......

I'd start with a couple of decent fire extinguishers - preferably the sort suitable for electrical fires unless you were looking for a job re-stringing harps....

Sorry, couldn't resist it. You surely didn't expect a sensible answer to such an open question, did you?

Rog.

Actually it might not be such a bad idea to get at least one extinguisher if I am working with high current DC, just in case...

seriously though to clarify things I was thinking more about PCB design, software and affordable kit for dealing with surface mount devices - last time I was dealing with this it was letraset and etch resist pens, and most hobbyists used bigger discrete components...
