I found this snippet on this evenings website from the local paper.
"CYCLISTS CAN GET THEIR BIKES MICROCHIPPED TO HELP DETER THIEVES"
10:30 - 04 January 2008
Cyclists can help protect their bike from theft by getting an electronic tag fitted to them.
Volunteers from the Crime and Disorder Action Group will be at St John's Court, Blaby, from 11am to 4pm on January 12 to fit microchips.
Police community initiatives co-ordinator, Sue Willett, said: "The subsidised £3 tags are unique and each comes with stick-on warning labels and the papers needed to register your bike.
"It is a very small price to pay for the protection it gives. All Leicestershire police stations are equipped with readers to examine cycles that are recovered.
"If the bikes have a chip, they can be returned to their rightful owner.
"It is also a very good way to prevent cycle theft and help the detection of crime.
"If a thief is caught in possession of a stolen coded bike, we can prove it is not their own."
For more, call Ms Willett on 0116 222 2222, using ID code 8041."
I can't link direct to the original article but anyone wanting to view it can find it near the end of the Jan 4th entries on this site.
