I would like to lower the gear ratio of the 8 speed free wheel hub. Currently fitted with a 34 tooth gear. I have had no luck finding a 36 tooth version anywhere.
Has anyone replaced the front chain ring with a smaller one?
Just want to get up steeper hills, not worried about top end speed.

Thanks for reading.

Chainging the front chainring is very straight-forward, but has the drawback that your top gear will be lowered, which can make pedalling at high speed difficult. The procedure is as simple as taking the old one off, remove however many links from the chain to compensate for the smaller chainwheel - probably half the difference, so going 42T to 38T is 4 teeth of which only two would be on the chain, which is one link complete link with two pins.

What about turning up the motor power a bit? Would that help?

I idly looked to see what the bike was like, and found the following curious statement
Climbing ability:- Yes up to 15 mph but to be used on flat terrain only!
At https://www.meritltd.co.uk/buy-FreeGo-Eagle-id422, but presumably part of the standard notes?

Problem is if the derailleur may not be capable of taking the extra 2t of 36t freewheeel.

I had a quick look at available chain rings, it looks a nightmare. Mine has a centre with internal teeth/serations, then there's the 5 bolt pcd size and offset to worry about.
Was hoping someone had already changed one and done all the hard work for me.

Changing the motor power might be the easiest option.

Thanks, I may take a punt on the freewheel version. That is before our tariffs change
There shouldn't be any tariff change from China to UK, it is tumpland vs the world.
