First problem.

Hi everyone,

Been a little while since I last posted but now need advice on my first encountered problem.I purchased my EASY LIV end of last September,and still loving it,get out as often as possible(weather permitting)yes I am a fair weather cyclist.
To date I have clocked 760 miles,is this average or not?Anyhow,To-day on return from a trip out,and as is usual practice,put battery on chage????except that the charger is not working.red light comes on,but no orange light to indicate that charging is taking place,no sound of fan, checked fuse looks good,so guess the charger has given up the ghost?I have written to 50 CYCLES to explain what has happened,so now await reply.In the meanwhile.has anyone else had similar problem?and if so was it attended to by 50 cycles?I am assuming that since I have only had the bike under five months,I should get a replacement charger???? Is this the case??
Any advice welcomed.

Hello Langtry, as you say a long time since we've heard from you. :)

Two possibilities.

The first is that chargers can lock up. If you completely disconnect the charger from both battery and mains and leave it for several minutes, you may find it working ok when you try again.

Otherwise, a little while ago there was a small batch of faulty Li-ion chargers failing early in life. 50cycles know of these and yours is under warranty. Obviously don't delay in notifying them if it does prove to be faulty.

Charger problem

Hello Flecc,

Thank you for your prompt reply,appreciated.I have tried charger again,following your advoce,but nothing,apart from the red light,dead as a dodo.I have informed 50 cycles,so will probably hear from them soon.
Thoroughly enjoying my easy liv,fabulous bike,I do not have experience of other elec bikes so am only able to comment on the Liv.
Soon after I bought my bike last September,my brother was quite taken with my new purchase,and promptly went to a local dealer and bought a Power Byke,which he likes,but frankly,for what my opinion is worth,no comparison to my Liv,not as good looking for starters,and sounds a bit noisy to me,otherwise its fine. Thanks again Flecc.

A pleasure Langtry.

I can tell that you're enjoying it from that mileage, quite high for a leisure rider over the Winter half of the year. Come Summer you'll never be off it! :)

I agree on the Liv, more to my taste than the Powabyke models, though the Liv price has steadily risen. Since it's £849 now, you could probably sell yours second hand for more than you paid for it new. :cool:

I dont think either would win any beauty competitions,but i would rather change the powerbyke battery after probably 2 years at £120 approx,than change the ezee probably after less than 12 months at £300.

Opinions

Hi,

It is a good thing that we are all able to voice our own individual opinions on what is and what isn't?Would be interested to know where the facts come from about the life of batteries?I would imagine that there might be some sort of an outcry if in fact the easy batteries last for less than 12 months?There must be easy riders out there who could confirm just how long the batteries are likely to last for?Anyhow,I still think my easy Liv would take top prize over some other ugly looking bikes on the market?

Don't be put off Langtry. Some, but by no means all Ezee li-ion owners have suffered from short battery life but I've yet to hear of it in relation to the Liv. If you've got through the cold weather without problems the chances are that yours will be OK.

And as for looks, well beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say.

Long live my Liv ??

Absolutely correct Ian,

Snce my earlier posting,I have been out to my very large garden shed where my bike lives,and tried the battery charger again,but it would not work apart from the red light coming on,I waited five minutes,and tried again,twice,and low and behold the orange light came on and it is now charging,wonders will never cease?Could it have been the cold weather I wonder?Anyhow,doing as suggested by Flecc,all seems to be well,just hope it remains so.

The problem that Paul mentions is that of the earlier batteries Langtry. Your more recent one is much improved, and Livs haven't suffered in the way of some other models since that bike was a later introduction. It also has a different motor type with different current draw characteristics.

These chargers can be stubborn to start like that. One of my two did it in the early days several times but has never done it since in over one and a half years.

Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the right thread to place a comment but I've had an ezee liv since June 07 and use it four or five times a week for an overall range of less than 3 miles. The bike is brilliant but I don't think the battery is going to last much longer - the orange warning comes up after about 0.6 miles and the red after about 2 miles so I don't dare travel far with it. Does anyone else have this sort of experience? I charge the bike after every trip and to all acounts the charger works perfectly.

I've spoken to 50 cycles but they haven't really reassured me.

Hello Mike, it's exactly the right thread.

Do you get any cut-outs where the bike just stops and you have to switch off and then on again to get it going?

If not, just use it and don't worry, since these meters can be subject to variations. The safety cut-out circuit that operates to protect the battery cells when the voltage gets too low is much more accurate than the handlebar meters.

If you do get cut-outs, their increasing frequency is a sign that the battery is on it's way out.
