After much frustration, head scratching and numerable distractions my first attempt at an e bike conversion is finally finished, accept for a new bag for the batteries as my current solution failed on my return trip from work today! I have to say that i am very pleased with the way it performes and have attached a few pictures if anyone is interested.

The rear bag idea is a non starter. It basically dropped onto the wheel under the weight of the batteries when I was negotiating some rough trails. The small full suss frame lacks any space to put batteries centrally. More head scratching i'm afraid.

Due to budget constraints I'm currently using two 18v 6ah drill batteries strapped together powering the bbs02 motor. I have a short but very hilly commute so not too bothered about range. I really want to keep the batteries centrally mounted on the bike possibly in front of the seatpost. Any suggestions gratefully received.

I fitted a Leckie bling ring 42 tooth with the stock 10 speed cassette. One problem I had was the original chain was too short and pulled the derailleur out of its ideal position. Everything now works really well, going into all gears without fear of losing the chain. The Leckie is expensive but well worth the money.

Just thought I would post an update after 3 days of riding. Batteries are amazing for cheap knock off's at £30 each so definitely an option if you need a cost effective solution. Motor pulls well and is not at all noisey. It's great that you can just leave it in the middle gear and adjust power assist to your own effort.
Obviously I can't predict any long term outcomes but this bike blows new e mtb's out of the water for half the price!
