So here is my current build idea it is to take two 1000W or 750W hub motors and put them on the fat bike i own, or a single front hub and a mid crank and restrict it down to 250W for road use. The hubs are R 180 F 140 and BB 120 most of these Bafang/8Fun seem to have everything i need however.

I read this post here - http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/is-it-road-legal-to-restrict-a-500w-motor.15529/

Cyclotricity used a password hidden within the actual dash, i also have seen a lot of these "dongle" bikes and one of the main powerhouse's the Stealth Series with its "At the push of a button" Between its road legal and competition modes. From what i have been reading its very much like unrestricted 50CC mopeds and restricted 250CC down to 125CC motorbikes. As long as the power during use is within the law on public roads it does not matter, but as soon as you are on private land you could derestrict and let loose without fear.

If i go ahead with this as long as i make sure there is an actual separation and restriction in place it will be fully road legal? I have access to a few private area's of land with some travel distance between them i would like an on/off option and not have to restrict myself to 250W permanently or be forced to buy a second fat bike.

Has it been done? Does there exist a pocket of information i have managed to miss? Ive been researching and plotting all day, but i am still very new to the whole electric conversion and reading can only get me so far.

Great idea, but you have some monumental obstacles to overcome. Firstly, normal hub-motors and crank-drives don't fit in a fatbike frame because the frame and forks are too wide. Secondly, it's a complete waste of time restricting anything to 250w because it's illegal anyway. You can have one 250w motor, not two, and not a restricted 1000w one.
