They're Americans, so if things really get bad the cyclists can get tooled up as well - contrary to some urban myth a Hummer isn't bullet proof. Apparently in "wild west" days a chap called Iver Johnson who made both guns and bicycles, and even "pistols for cyclists"

google shows lots of arguments on US bike forums both pro and anti-gun and it does appear a fair few cyclists do carry their personal firearms with them, but would have thought suitable holsters and recoil could be an issue if trying to fire whilst riding!

This all seems a bit one sided, the motorist stops and then suddenly-

However, the motorist then tried to flee the scene, as cyclists tried to record the license plate number.

Recording the license plate or behaving like an incensed mob baying for blood? Why were so many coppers required as well, something smells about this story.
