Eddie,
I bought an exposure joystick head torch and its so light, excuse the pun, that you don't notice it. It's fab and i attached the small red light onto the back of it. Great beam for spotting deer at night in local woods.
I also bought the Garmin 820 and always carry my phone. I feel safer as if i crash the Garmin info's the missus via call and gps. Mind you, not sure if she'd rescue me :).
I do some bike packing overnight and night rides like yourself. When you cycle alone, you have to be prepared. I found a rider 2 years ago that had crashed and couldn't move. Called ambulance and forestry opened gates to rescue him. Learn from that i thought!
The terrain that I tend to ride at night time doesn't allow for a helmet light, unless side mounted which I have tried but didn't like. There are just too many low hanging trees and branches, and the helmet usually takes a knock or so per ride. My Camelbak has also pulled me off the bike twice when it became hooked whilst ducking under a low hanging branch.
I use a helmet light when riding on the South Downs at night time though. :)

Ref being prepared, I have that one pretty well covered after falling and beating myself up pretty badly a couple of years ago. The most worrying bit being a split helmet and feeling very sick. Only my regular riding partner would have known my location, and I telephoned him straight away, and called him every 5 minutes until I reached a main road.

I now have an app that sends a location text to one number, and I always text the land owner of where I ride at night time, when I arrive at the woodland, and again when I leave.
I also ride with enough kit to run a mountain exploration trip. :)

Thanks Trevor. :)

Strange how despite just how rubbish that the weather is again at the moment, it always feels great to out.
I have swapped my working week around, and grabbed the chance to pop and explore more of the woodland that I have been granted permission to ride in. There certainly some great potential, but also plenty of work to be done.
For me though that is all part of the fun, as I am not really into groomed trails that are ridden by others to an inch of their useful life.
I prefer not really knowing what is around the next corner, or going down the next drop without being really too sure what is on the other side. That one caught me out today though, as it was near vertical and had a fallen tree across it. All good fun though.

Thoughts about tyres were also at front of my mind today. I am contemplating a plus size hardtail and have been making comparisons. I enjoy the benefits that narrow section tyres give in respect of cutting through mud and the grip that they offer, but came to the conclusion today that as much of my riding involves going over fallen trees and off camber roots, where the low ground pressure spread and grip that a plus bike will give, could come in very useful indeed. The first photo below highlights such terrain, and the photo was taken at the point where the bike had spun up, and slide out from underneath and stopped.
Obviously if it had been a dry sunny day, then the slippery branches wouldn’t have presented a problem, but we don't get many of those days at this time of year.

All in all, an afternoon well spent.

Another night, and another ride.

Out with my mate for our weekly ride out. Could of done without the rain and fog, but still brilliant being out.

I also came across an area that I will have to go back when conditions improve, to try to get some better photos.

One of my pet hates.. Forgetting to clean and dry my overshoes, then having to put them on still wet and muddy from the last ride.

Just spent 5 days in the Gower Peninsular and on our way home had a few hours for a first visit to the Afan Mountain Bike Centre. Stunning scenery on the coast and a couple of photos of my wife and me, top of the cliffs on the Coastal Path route.
Excellent facilities at the Afan and a nice change to be riding in mainly open countryside although there were some forest tracks.
Photo 1 and 2 the Gower, 3,4 and 5 Afan.

Personal EPIRBs are now about £180. More rugged than phone and work anywhere in world.
Yep. A personal EPIRB (PLB) or Sattellite Tracker / Communicator such as the Spot GPS or Delorme InReach is a wise choice if there's a chance that you'll be riding where there's no mobile phone coverage and especially if riding alone.

Another option to consider is a PAYG SIM card from one of the Isle of Man mobile phone providers e.g., https://www.manxtelecom.com/personal/mobile/tariffs/pay-as-you-go or https://web.sure.com/isleofman/mobile/price-plans in a cheap lightweight phone as a backup to your regular phone. The advantage here is that as a 'foreign' phone roaming in the UK you can choose from any of the four network providers (O2, EE, 3 and Vodafone) and switch between them as you like. As such there is less chance that you'll be caught in a spot with no mobile phone coverage. I haven't tried this myself it's a tip I read on a sailing forum but there's no reason why it wouldn't work albeit you may need to top up the phone regularly and make a call every now and again to keep the account active.

One of my mates mucking about on his Levo.

Sadly not ebike related, but I did spend pleasant few hours out on the Ultra 1964 today, to complete more trail building work.
I'm also trying to perfect my alpine turns, and using the pedal bike rather than the ebike, seems to make things much easier. The one annoying aspect of todays ride was that I could have done with my shock pump.

Ebike related..

I made zero effort to make this look neat or tidy, as I have another use on the next bike for it, and it could be wrapped around the battery rather than the frame as well, but I have come across a 'tight wad' version of a neoprene battery cover, or Levo owners battery/frame cover.

All for the hefty price of £2.49 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231653722930?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Any joking aside, on something like the Levo, this could actually prove a neat and tidy solution for protecting the battery area. Two of them would be ideal, and they can be cut to length, so could be made to look very tidy.

and without the mud. That's dedication for you.

Could have done without the mud as well. When its this muddy, i either don't clean bike each time or wait till it dries out. This is mean mtbing

Luckily I seem to have the cleaning down to a fine art now, so interim cleaning only takes a few minutes. Fork Juice is a wonderful thing for preventing mud from staying on the bike when washed. :)

As for being colour coordinated, there could soon be a clash of colour. :)
