Is it possible that the wiring to the motor (and Hall effect sensors, if fitted), has somehow been altered?
Did it work correctly before?
Are you capable and do you have the equipment to check the wiring out? If not, one of those controller/motor testers (under 10 UK Pounds from ebay) may assist you further, but no 100% guarantee.
If buying one, I would suggest one with the motor signals on a round/circular display! (some are just in a line, accurate but probably less easy for an amateur to understand....!)
