Ebike tester says motor hall sensor is ok only when rotated backwards?

Hi all

We have been trying to repair a ebike so bought a tester off eBay to help us narrow down the problem.
When we rotate the motor wheel forwards no motor hall led’s on the tester light up at all but when we rotate backwards there is quite a amount of resistance from the wheel but the hall sensor led’s flash in a uniform pattern as they are surposed to does this mean the motor hub is defective ?
We also had an intermittent 5v led indicator when testing the controller so we replaced it and now have a static 5v led on when testing but no other led lights up when testing the controller but do when testing throttle etc individually.
Thanks

When you test the motor resistance, it must be disconnected from the controller and the three bullet connectors must not be allowed to touch each other. If when you conect to the controller, the resistance increases significantly, the controller has one or more blown mosfets.
We also had an intermittent 5v led indicator
Where?

Throw the led motor tester away as it doesn't give any voltage readouts except for lit led's sometimes, one is better spending that money on an equally good DVM and manually testing items that give a meaningful readout.
The simple test that vfr mentions is more telling then the motor tester and free.
