My latest creation is the Alfine 8 hub geared Cotic Roadrat with G370 front mini hub motor, pleasingly the hub rides not that far off an unpowered bike thanks to the much lower internal motor gearing. This means riding above the 15.5mph is quite easy, to better improve range I have taken the cut off speed lower and set it to 22km/h or a little over 13.6mph. Doing so allows me to use more of my effort to be bike fit and fitter within myself.
As I ride at between 15 - 19mph it means none of the fluctuating at the 15.5mph limit and one can see the voltage sag of 0.5v no longer occurring as often as it was.

That makes a lot of sense Neal. The nicest e-bike I've known for riding without power was the Giant Lafree Lite which had very early phase down of assist power, gone long before 15 mph. I also frequently rode that between 15 and 19 mph, only slowing to use the assistance when meeting hills.

With any easy riding bike system, it makes sense to lower the assist speed setting if one can access the settings. It's nice just having the extra zip of power at the offset and if one is sensible and uses the gears as normal it doesn't take much for me to go faster then the 13.6mph.
