Because my eyes are not in a good state, and I can't see well enough to true wheels by eye anymore, I now true laterally by feel and watching how they spin - no truing stand needed:
1) Tighten the brake cable until one or both brake pads touch the rim a little.
2) Take one brake pad off, remove the distortion of the wheel on the opposite side. Then put that brake pad back on.
3) Take the other brake pad off, remove wheel distortion. Put that pad back on.
4) Tighten the brake cable a bit more, until one or both brake pads touch the rim again.
5) Goto point 2) and repeat until the wheel is perfectly true laterally.
