I thought I would introduce my new electric bike holiday company - E-Zee Riders - to this Leisure, Touring & E-Bike holidays section.

We are new for summer 2019 with our main aims of:

-bringing the famous Land’s End to John O’Groats route to a wider audience by using e-bikes
-raising the profile of touring by e-bike
-promoting the use of the Sustrans National Cycle Network.

Our new venture has already attracted a good deal of positive attention both in the national press and across social media.

We are now keen to see what you guys - the real experts of e-bikes - think of our holiday adventure?

Good luck with the new business. I provided a couple of ebikes for some LEJOG riders a few years ago. What bikes have you chosen for hiring out?

Thanks for the support Jonah. After a great deal of research we have decided to buy a fleet of Haibike Sduro Trekking 3.0 bikes - they have the Bosch Performance CX motor. Very useful for the steepest of inclines...

How many miles in a day on average then, as you will need to have battery on full time because the CX isn't zero resist? Will you be using multiple battery packs each day?

It’s an average of 84 miles per day. We have spare charged batteries for each bike. Testing shows the Performance CX will do c45 miles with c 3000ft of climbing per 500WH battery, compared to c50 miles for the Active Plus motor. So not too much difference.

Perhaps the ALP only has a 10% edge if you are stuck all day in Turbo but the real difference is at low/zero assist.

The range calculator suggests you'll need to be in Tour mode on average to get 40 miles out of a CX assuming hilly tour, hybrid tyres, 14 mph, 100kg total weight and light winds.

At those setting ALP has a 35% range edge even before you take into account the possibility of cycling it with the motor off using its zero resistance.

Of course if you've lots of spare batteries and plan to use them liberally that doesn't really matter, but at 84 miles a day, some folks are going to need a third battery on some days.

Anyway the Haibikes are lovely bikes and the idea is a great one, so good luck with it

Two batteries will be tight for 80+ miles, particularly on the hilly sections.

I see the cost for a single rider is about £2,800 for 15 nights, plus 15 evening meals.

Doing the ride unsupported, I reckon you could get by on a £100 or so a night, including a pub dinner.

Thus you are paying best part of £1,500 for bike hire and van support.

I'm afraid you will be up against the general belief that cycling is cheap transport, so a cycling holiday should be a cheap one.

Three grand a person puts you in premium foreign holiday territory.

Yep Andy and RobF, 2 batteries would be cutting it fine - so we have 3 and more if needed.

you need better bikes for the price as it sounds like hell with a 15mph speed limit id not do it even if you gave me 3k lol.

now if you went 80mph and stopped off to look round each day would be more of a holiday so 1 bike for distance travel and a ebike to go explore on round the towns.

If I was younger, fitter and a lot lighter I would love to do it. I think 84 miles a day in the saddle will rule out the vast majority of E Bikers- but good luck, great website and I hope it works.

That's about 6 hours at 20 km/hr.

Are they targeting traditional e bikers though?

One thing ebikes do well on long tours is flatten out fitness differences between friends and family members and another is to just make long days in the saddle a lot more doable.

I agree it seems priced for the adventure experience market, but there might be quite a lot of people around who would want to knock Land's End to JoG off their bucket list and for whom money is secondary to having a well organised and fun trip. See glamping.

Andy, you couldn’t have put it much better. Using e-bikes with the extra battery capacity and not having to worry about running out of power means riders can decide exactly how much effort they want to put in and still be able stick together as a group. Fitness levels need not be a consideration. In the bookings todate, we are seeing a real mix of the experienced e-bikers and traditional cyclists who desire a bit of a helping hand.

I just had a look at your E-Zee Riders website and am very impressed.

I've been thinking about doing Lejog on my ebike for about 8 years but it's not easy to find someone to do it with and up to now, there has only been supported road bike tours available.

Doing this iconic trip on an electric bike would take the pain out of the journey for older, less fit folk like myself and still give the pleasure of the changing landscapes and sights.

The prices also seem very reasonable when compared to non ebike tours.

I wish you every success with your venture and may well book it up myself in the future.

Shame, it was a good idea, bit too expensive for me. I have a desire to do LEJOG on an ebike one day, although I would most likely do it independently rather than an organised tour.

It's the sort of thing that would be great if there was a group of like minded folk looking to do this trip one year, that would be prepared to join up and chip in with a van hire and accommodation for a volunteer (free beer provided of course) to drive a van with our own spare batteries....

87.4 miles average a day for ten days is unrealistic for most e bikers, 41.63 miles average over 21 days would be doable but then it would get very expensive.

In the end, I would have to agree with Soundwave, that the joy of e biking is exploring and enjoying your ride and once you have your bike, that's not too expensive.
