Help! E bike has just one power level, which gives too much assistance. Can I modify it?

My wife has an old but hardly used 24V Claud Butler 1 electric bike. We have just re-celled the battery and it is now TOO good. Hardly any effort is needed except on the hills. This bike has just one power setting ie maximum. Is there a simple way or someone that can modify this so it has lower assistance levels for cycling on the flat?

It's a shame you did the battery because you could have made it a better bike all round by going up to 36v.

Anyway, there are a couple of things you can do: Firstly, you can change the controller. A decent one will be about £80. It'll give you nice power algorithms (5 levels) and an LCD, like you get on most recent ebikes. You can get a cheaper one for about £40 with 5 levels, but they still give you a bit of a fierce start in all levels.

Secondly, if your bike has a throttle or a connector for one on the controller, you can override your pedal assist by selecting the speed with the throttle or one modified as cruise control.

Is this relatively easy to do?. Can you recommend a model that I can investigate. I guess there are people who can do this at a price.

I doubt that anybody will do it for you unless you have a good friend that likes doing that sort of thing. You'd have to do some wiring and soldering. If you don't have those skills and don't want to learn by doing, you're pretty well stuck with what you have. Everything is easy when you can do it.

If you show us a pic of the motor connector and the pin layout we can then see what to suggest. Theoretically the only wiring that may need looking at might be the battery connection , again a pic of it will help.
Most controller kits with lcd, PAS & throttle and speed sensor if needed simply are plug and play.

Thanks, I will do so. We are away until September but will post pictures then. Thank you again.
