Do any of your 'tour' on pedelecs without any other vehicle?

Featured Replies

Just wondered if anybody has toured from say b&b to b&b or campsite to campsite.. Or does the recharging issue / distance progibit that?

Also what's the furthest you have cycled on pedelec without 'juice'?

Interesting question and look forward to seeing the replies! I think most of us don't go very far to have a battery issue.. but that is why we're working on CycleCharge..to make e-bikes more practical and usable for longer distance and touring as you put it, visiting different locations and parts of the country over distances that wouldn't be possible otherwise without charge points on route.

The most I've done is 18 miles round trip on mine on a single charge, and that was off a 5Ah battery remarkably using pedal assist at the highest level. There's no way I'd be fit enough to pedal that distance without the assistance.

I think the capacity of batteries on most bikes will take most users a very decent range before it becomes an issue to worry about, unless you're one of those who rides without pedalling, then your range is severely limited.. my 5Ah battery would only manage about 4 miles round trip on throttle only.

The advantage of eBromptons and other smaller folder bikes like my eMezzo is that you can take them virtually anywhere on public transport so your reach and range is practically anywhere you can get a train or coach to ;-) Take it for a day out etc

Furthest on one charge = 72 miles on the Brompton (14Ah, 48V)

Furthest without power (involuntary) - 12 miles also on the eBrompton and it was hard bloody work!

In the middle of planning a tow path tour. 5 days in July. Hope to do 40 to 50 mile per day.

Call it a min tour. Our 1st on e bikes. It will be interesting.

I am sure that with a midday day battery charge over a long lunch, the mileage could be doubled.

Shall be posting our experiences after the tour.

72 miles, wow that's impressive. Was that more or less continuous riding or with spaces inbetween? And did you ride on med/high pedal assist?

This was on my custom built eBrompton which is throttle only with cruise control and three position speed switch, there are no assist 'levels'. I rode quite conservatively, the journey was in two parts - from Surrey into London (work) and back again. From memory it was full throttle all the way but I went slower up hills and freewheeled downhill.

Cycle analyst showed 13Ah for the whole journey so I pretty much flattened the battery but it was still giving full assist at the end. Battery is Cellman lifepo4 and was still at 50V at the end, sagging to 48V up hills. This was just about 700Wh.

I wouldn't do it again, I was quite uncomfortable doing that distance on a Brompton, mainly due to having to concentrate for so long on pothole avoidance. I do intend to try it on my ezee Giant conversion at some point (in the summer) but wouldn't risk that without a charge at work as it seems to use a lot more power than the Brompton.
