Disk break won't align right after conversion?

Hopefully someone can help because since doing the conversion I've only ever gotten very weak breaking on the rear wheel.

I even swapped the break for one from another bike to test and it made only a slight difference.

Is it possible to buy more adjustable breaks or is there something i might be doing wrong?

A bit more info needed on the type and make, any close up photos could help.
Also do you mean since the conversion to electric or brakes.

After fitting the hub motor wheel conversion kit the disk breaks no longer grab properly like before when breaking.

It's just a standard mountain bike with mechanical disk breaks not the hydraulic type. Looking i can see it fits in ok and there's a mm gap each side but its like it doesn't clamp down properly and only give very weak rubbing resistance. I've tried all sorts of adjustments to how hard the break is pulled and how the break pads are positioned.

It either has a constant rubbing when not breaking if i adjust too close or no real breaking when there's room for wheel to freely rotate. There's no ideal position i can see so im not sure what to do now, i was thinking it might be possible to buy new break blocks that have more adjustments possible but im not sure what to look for? Thanks.

I've a mechanical Shimano disc brake, both pads are adjustable and although its a bit fiddly I get good results. 1mm gap each side sounds a lot, my manual says 0.2 to 0.4mm each side, feeler gauges still have their uses.

Assuming the pads and disc are free of oil, maybe they just need a period of settling in.
