hi all : so never thought i'd ride a bike again - as have severe arthritis and other problems , then had a quick spin on a friends folding city bike - Ulrika - i can do this !! - soo got a folder of my own - all well and good , BUT balance is a bit iffy at times so also got an e-TRIKE - much better !! - and its a replacement for my aging mobility scooter that's on its last legs .

now at 66 - i don't go far - maybe to the shops ( about 1 k round trip ) and occasional forays to a local park to do amateur radio - as interference levels high in town where i live - also VERY weather dependent !! - so not exactly doing miles a day .lol - but at least it gets me out sometimes and have been learning new mechanic skills as my last bike was near on 25 years ago - so the complexities of disk brakes etc etc ( i stared with rod linkage pull ups at age 6 btw and can still sort them even today )

in all the bike and trike have spurred me TO go out more - and medical advice says gentle exercise of joints is good - so e-bike ideal as i have as yet not really had to peddle hard at all

reactions to the trike are amusing - as its the only one round here i know of - from "that's cool man " to " I've got a trike ( 6 y/o kid ) - and a few "well you don't see many of those " ............. but of course , there's always one !! - in a shared pedestrian/cycle area in town - " you should not be riding that here - you F****** cyclists are all the same F****** menaces the lot of you " - now what chummy is going to make of the new "byrel bike " fleet loosed on the city i don't know /lol

any way that's me - reading the forums atm - lots of good info - all the best to all

Welcome to the forum Brett, good to learn you are able to get out and about on two or three wheels. I'm guessing that the hire fleet you mention is the Beryl Bike one in Southampton and the Isle of Wight.

Good on yer, Brett. Glad to hear you are starting to get out and about on your trike.

I believe others on here have medical problems of some sort, that cause limitations of what we can do, but, for me, electric bikes have given me back the ability to cycle again, so that has to be good.

I think it is difficult to know who hates us cyclists the most, pedestrians or car drivers.

I recall along one shared pathway, ringing my bell to warn a pedestrian that I was coming. She turned around and screamed abuse and saying to read the notices that cyclists must give way to pedestrians. So I told her to read the rest of the notice "but pedestrians must not impede cyclists."

yep we are public enemy #1 mobility scooter users now #2 - I'm just waiting for someone to say i can't be disabled if i can ride a bike ........... just waiting ........... already been told i am not disabled but lazy for using a mobility scooter on a few occasions because i have to get off to go into some shops - so well used to the comments as i said to the last one who said "you don't look disabled " i replied "well you don't look stupid - but there we go " ................. silence .lol
