I don't like the look of standard bike helmets ( although I have one ! ), so I was thinking of getting a Dirt Lid style helmet as in the link below.

SIXSIXONE Dirt Lid Helmet | £24.95 | Quality MTB Cycle Helmet | www.bikeoutlet.co.uk

Are these helmets as safe as 'normal helmets' ?

Does anyone on the forum wear this style of helmet ?

I have also seen skull cap liners which would suit this style of helmet and would be pretty good in cold weather.

I would have thought so, and they appear to give more all round protection.

There's some similarity to the cycle helmets used in Australia and New Zealand, photographed here:

I do see a good few of these helmets being worn in London, usually by the sort of rider who at least wants to *look* as though he's a cycle courier, so they're certainly acceptable from the point of view of being fashionable. The price is right too.

The only reservation I might have is that it's a 'one size fits all' helmet, so if you've got a big head or a small one you might find it unsuitable, even though the ad suggests that a good fit is achieved by means of adjustable pads for MOST riders' heads.

I thought they were probably safer than normal helmets because they were smoother and fitted closer around the head making them less likely to twist and cause neck injury in certain types of accident.

Yes, they are expensive Terry, but they aren't alone in that. This one is an example of the many road helmets at a similar price.

Because I couldn't find one with a peak I ended up with BELL 2009 Metropolis Helmet, Rain Cover, Mirror & Rear Light as i didn't want one that looked like I had an alien egg on my head, it looked more like a cap, subdued colour and a rain cover, I recommend. I don't use the Mirror though because my missus would beat me and I can't focus on it that close anyway.
