I currently have a Dinotte rear light which is extremely bright, and motorists tend to give me much more room when they overtake than when I had a more normal light. It wasn't cheap though, I'm afraid.
I too became the proud owner of a Dinotte 140L rear light.

Without doubt this is the brightest rear light for a bike I have ever seen. I recall Russ saying he had one last year, but was too cautious to spend the £100 for 'a bike light'.

Now, a year on, its probably the best money I have spent for my bike. Note this is specific to my situation, commuting over 10 miles each way, in very heavy congested traffic, in the dark and at rush hour. I had become very 'conscious' of the traffic, some of them getting rather too close when overtaking for comfort, and as Flecc mentioned, your mirrors dont work as well at night (maybe Haku's rear camera and front LCD would work better).

Since starting to use this light, I have been given MUCH more room and time by the traffic with only the occasional driver getting closer than 3 feet (which used to be the norm even though I had 4 separate rear led lights)

I am still trying to decide which lighting mode to use on this, they are soo good. IMHO
