Probably more have done it than will admit it.

Soon the fun Prevention Officers will be along to tell you that the world will end if you do it.

My advice: Tell everybody you changed your mind.

So far, nobody as ever been able to show evidence of anybody being prosecuted for or had any repercussions of using a dongled bike, though there's a few made up scare stories going around from time to time.

Did someone call?
If you get caught or are involved in an accident it could be real rat do do,s
But the catch rate has been low/ virtually none.
But some boring farts like me say if you want 30 mph and super range get a Honda plastic.

You will lose range and gain fun. On the road you will have trouble with drivers not appreciating your new found wings you have to ride like you were on a moped (you are).

Technically it is illegal but I believe that if you weigh 90kg as I do and do long rides fully loaded with 2 pannier bags and a centre rack bag the total weight is going to effect how much a 250 watt motor will push you and it will certainly struggle to do more than 15.5 mph whether its de-restricted or not, and I can vouch for that!

Yes, that was a good point. As your speed goes up, you'll notice that the car drivers will give you a lot more problems because their frame of reference is that a bicycle is slow. 20 mph isn't too bad, but by the time you get to 25 mph, you'll know what I mean. Any faster than that means you have to concentrate on what they're doing. Your brakes and tyres won't be sufficient in an emergency, so you need to concentrate on your own riding too, which can be a little tiring. I had a 30 mph bicycle, but I found it too much hassle. It's not you that's the problem. it's the other vehicles.

Don't think I'm some sort of wuss when it comes to speed. When I'm on my VRF400, not many people can keep up - trust me. They struggle to keep up even when I'm on my cooking NTV650.

If riding at speed in the dark, I use decent lights that don't flash. Drivers then think you're a motorbike - until it dawns on them that you're not, but by then they've given way. When the battery is low, the light reverts to flashing mode & then I slow down, as drivers equate flashing lights to cyclists.

I can't see the point of a dongle for the riding I do? Maintaining fitness is important and extra power for climbing would be of no help to me. 99 % of my riding is off road and assistance to 15 mph seems to be perfect. My adrenaline buzz comes from the fast downhill sections that I ride. I do think I might be interested if there was a moto x race type of event for derestricted mtb's?

I find it strange that some people suggest the brakes on an unrestricted e bike will be insufficient. When I ride/roll my e bike down a steep hill at 40mph plus with two heavy panniers on the braking forces must but significantly more than 20mph on flat???

Depends on the bike. Rim brakes would struggle with that. Hydraulics are a must for faster speeds electric or not
