Dawes repair

Hi, I'm trying to repair my dad's bike. It's a dawes arc (not arc2) he accidentally smashed the lcd display and I've been trying to repair it.
First I sourced an almost exact (or so I thought) replacement display but this came with a 5 pin in line connector (the original plugged directly into the controller. I then purchased an adapter lead ( 5 pin to controller) which I spliced onto the original cable from the controller. The cables were the same colours so what could go wrong, well long story short the colours didn't match up and nothing worked, eventually I resorted to splitting the new display case open to see what the correct conections where, once I connected everything up correctly the lcd sprang into life but gave an error 30 (communication abnormality). I'm wondering if the display is not compatible with the controller or if I inadvertently damaged the controller (or display) with the initial incorrect wiring. I'm now looking to purchase a complete replacement controller /display set but I'm worried about getting the wrong item. Dawes tech support have been useless. Would appreciate any advice anyone can give. It's a 36v 250w motor. I'd like to keep it as close to the original setup if possible so it's the same for my dad. Thanks in advance!

Error 30 comm's could literally be anything, I think one of the most common issues is a fault on any 5v line as they all use the same pcb 5v rail/connection.

If you connected those 5 wires incorrectly, you can wipe out the controller and/or the LC. Two of the wires carry battery voltage and if you connect them to the comms wires. it's bad news.

The LCD will light up as long as you have the red and black wires connected, but the software in the CPU can be completely blown, so it doesn't function.

The comms error isn't a good sign. Unfortunately, there's no way to test without special equipment.

It would be best to get a new controller and display, but they'll only work with your battery if it has no comms. I'd be surprised if ity does have comms, but you have to check. How many wires are connected between the battery and controller? Two means no comms. Any more than that is trouble.

Thanks, that was my thinking too, the battery only has two wires connected so should be OK hopefully. I'll order up a new controller & LCD. And try that. Thank you!
