Banned from driving for 12 months seems absurdly little; especially if it concurrent with his prison sentence.
When a court imposes a driving ban alongside a prison sentence or detention and training order, the ban's duration is automatically extended by half the custodial term. This extension applies even if the offender is released on parole after serving part of the sentence. This ensures the ban does not run out during the sentence.
Of course this also reflects that almost all prison sentences are automatically halved anyway, subject to good behaviour
during the sentence and during any parole period following. So footballer Akins will only serve 7 months in prison.
P.S. I forgot the September 2024 amendment by the Labour government to cope with prison overcrowding. This reduced the halving of sentences of less than 5 years to 40% reduction, so Akins will only serve 5 months 18 days in prison, the balance of the 14 months served in the community which could mean back playing for Mansfield Town next season.
