Saw this today (at Broomhill Art Hotel, N.Devon). My wife said it looked a bit like us on our electric bikes!

A bit harsh Mike even if I might agree much is unskilled and there is certainly no shortage of pretentiousness.

What about this from one of the artists whose work was there.

"Mackenzie's current artistic project is a theoretical investigation into the deconstruction of Phallogocentrism; in which she proposes to link Irigaray's 'labial' language of difference to Deleuze's rhizome-thought to form a potential 'labial/rhizomatic' way of thinking in critique of the Phallogocentric traditional image of thought. In conveying this Utopian proposal through a theory of aesthetics, Mackenzie suggests could be the starting point for the emancipation of feminine ways and means of expression. By merging together an artistic practice and a philosophy of art and aesthetics, she aims to create both scholarly work and artistic encounters that convey this feminist philosophy of 'labial' art-politics in order to explore Utopian ideals and change through artistic expression."

Have you got that?

I think I heard what they thought they said but I'm not sure they said what I thought they meant, or something like it

This is what my Arts Graduate Daughter and also Son in Law call ' Talking Art *******'
Apparently, they are actually taught this at Art School.
Basically, the artist is completely inept and incapable of any real art, so thy throw this rubbish together and talk it up.
Probably used an on-line Post Modernist generator to do so.

A lot of "art" really is pretentious rubbish. Art is not essential to our lives. But neither are e bikes, e cigs, booze, TV and a lot of other things. Art can be one of the things that enriches our lives, and make our lives feel meaningful.A lot of the pretentiousness is more concerned with the marketing of art, rather than art itself.

When photography was invented and perfected, it was felt by meany that drawing and painting would become redundant. This patently was not the case. Drawing and painting are special because they can create scenes that do not exist in the real world. They can create scenes where bits and pieces that exist in separate places are all brought together in one scene.

A piece of art has no value except what someone is prepared to pay for it.Its value can change very rapidly due to unforeseen circumstances. How much would Rolph Harris`s famous portrait of the Queen be worth now?

To me, some of the greatest artists are the so called art forgers, who can copy the works of a wide range of famous artists.

I'm not sure about art not being essential to our lives. I would almost go so far as to say it is a natural part of being sentient beings. Surely we all see beauty around us and appreciate it? And some of mankind's oldest artefacts are art. There was a news item recently about cave paintings being discovered in Indonesia

You can almost feel the delight that the 'artists' must have felt when they left their handprints for posterity. And these are 40 000 years old!
What is not 'art' is the constant need to be 'different', that the gobbledygook quoted by Jonah above typifies.

Most of this post modernist writing is now becoming recognised as utter rubbish, see Fashionable Nonsense Wiki.
Irigaray, Deleuze and others have been accused of deliberate nonsense.
'If a text seems incomprehensible, it is probably for the very good reason that it is.'
