I know a few members over on Endless Sphere, have complained about their BBSxx becoming noisy as the miles pile on.
Mine has gradually become noisier over the last few hundred miles, and I decided today to do something about it.
The noise was coming from the final drive. It was worse when pedaling the bike without power and less noisy whilst under power. It sounded like the final drive and motor cog needed lubing up.
This procedure can be done without removing the crank arm and pedal on the final drive side, and takes about 15 minutes.
I grabbed some of this:
and filled one of these with the grease:
Then I unbolted the chainring and moved it to the end of the crank arm.
I unscrewed the plastic final drive cover and moved that to the end of the crank arm too.
This exposed the final drive. I have previously greased the final drive, but it obviously needed a little more in there:
BTW, this is just a generic picture of the BBSxx with the side cover off. You do not have to remove the motor from the bike!
Using the syringe, I literally squeezed as much of the grease as I could, around the small cog and larger cog. Getting it right into the gear teeth.
Do not be afraid to pack the stuff in there folks
Then I refitted everything in reverse and voila, the drive is ultra quiet again
