Controller problem - no voltage on brake sensors

Not sure if this is by the rules, but I'm posing a question form another forum here in hope of getting more thoughts.

I installed a new kit, and and the brake symbol on the lcd is showing constantly and hence motor is not running (it did work briefly one time for a test ride).
I've looked at all connections, even opened up the controller to check for bad soldering etc. Have not found anything out of order that I can see (I'm a newbie though).

When measuring voltage (between signal and GND) on the brake sensor connectors coming out of the controller box one of them shows 0.01 and the other shows 0.7V. This is very strange in the first place, as they both connect to the same place...

To my understanding they should be showing 5V.

What could be wrong?
