Congratulation to Chris Froome

Chris Froome has just won the 100th Tour de France for Britain, following Bradley Wiggins win last year of the 99th Tour.

The achievement of Chris was even greater than that of Bradley, by common consent the Tour this year was more difficult, Chris won the very tough Mont Ventoux stage which was a first for Britain, and the support for Chris from the Sky team was less strong this year due to illness and absence.

It has to be admitted that there's an international element in this win, Chris was born in Kenya and educated in South Africa, and his main support rider, Richie Porte, is an Australian born in Tasmania.

But the question now is, does Chris get a knighthood, since Bradley got one for his win and British cycling team manager Dave Brailsford was also knighted? It's a difficult question, if he does, what about Andy Murray and his Wimbledon, Grand Slam and Olympics wins? And then there's the rest of the queue for honours after notable wins, the British rugby team and golfer Justin Rose just for starters!

I'm glad these decisions aren't mine.

Aye, congratulations to him. As for the knighthood, give it to all or none I say but who am I to say. ;)

Nope; Wiggins shouldn't have got one and neither should Hoy.
If they'd followed up their achievements with a decade or two of really good work, then fine. But not just for winning gongs.

I agree with this, the reward is in the achievement and the entries in the record books, titles and state medals are not necessary. Anyway, as I've illustrated, these titles are a bit of a trap for those who have to decide who gets them.

Yes, it's a difficult decision but only so because we still operate the stupid, unfathomable honours system in this country, an anachronism, like the monarchy, which serves no useful purpose, particularly when the gongs are frequently awarded to some of the most unsavoury and unscrupulous characters in upper-crust society.

Sports people are perfectly happy to win medals, see their prowess recorded in statistical form for posterity without the need for recognition in the honours lists. Is not SPOTY enough?

Sentiments very much seconded, the perfect sportsman and gentleman, a model indeed for youngsters but also for those sports persons who so often fall well short of these ideals in behaviour.
