Confused..530w Brose motor legal in the U.K.?

Featured Replies

I have read the legislation guide on here and it says 250w rated maximum

My LBS says they are legal as they put out 250w average but 530w max in turbo mode

I'm confused, what does rated mean? And how is average measured ?

On a side note the bike I'm specifically referring to is a specialized Turbo Levo my LBS says the Bosch engine says 250w but puts out 600w max though the Brose motors have more torque, My LBS says the 250w average figure is just a marketing stunt to keep them legal in normal modes but turbo modes will get more and more power year on year.

Don't worry. The way the EN15194 regulation specifies the power rating of pedelec motors allows for peak powers hugely in excess of the legal continuous maximum rating figure of 250 watts.

Those you mention are all EU and UK legal and will not be challenged by the authorities since all are rated at 250 watts. Most pedelecs on the market have been through approved laboratory testing and certified EN15194 compliant.

.

As flecc says above. The 'marketing stunt' and 'more power by year' spiel are new one on me. I think I might want a Levo too, now I've heard that!

Sent from here to there with computer wizardry.

The rating system is a test to prove that the motor can deliver its stated power continuously. It was to stop people over rating a small motor and calling it a super power job. It tests that the motor can deliver 250 watts continuously without overheating. It can peak at much higher values as most legal bikes do.

You the customer have to rely on the manufacturer who says the motor is a legal 250 watt Euro approved one. As an innocent purchaser unless it had sixteen valves and used petroleum as a lubricant how are you to know it's not legal?

If you made it up yourself then you would carry the can but your buying it from a recognised shop.relax.enjoy.
