This was seen as a problem, way before today, as it was reckoned that the average electric car, is usually worth LESS secondhand, than the cost of a replacement battery, once it reaches around 5 years old.
Chevy has suddenly recognised that, but many electric vehicle customers, not yet!
There are also the "first/buyer" user of an electric car, who say uses it for 4 years, possibly using up to 80% of the possible battery life, AND STILL GETTING A GOOD PRICE FROM AN UNINFORMED SECONDHAND ELECTRIC CAR BUYER!!!
It is IMHOO, partly similar to some very high revving Porsche engines of 30 or 40 years ago, which had a planned life of around 100,000 KMs. Owners were selling their cars for a good price at around 85,000 KMs, and letting the second owner pick up the replacement/rebuilt engine costs, when getting such engines rebuilt was expensive for then, but looks cheap now, at around €15,000!!! Real prices today probably double that in today's world!
This was one of the several easons I decided not to buy electric, many years ago.
For example, I would then need two days to get back to the UK with an overnight hotel and battery charge.....and I could not take my caravan either......No short weekend trips anymore!
A possibly better electric alternative would be a Plug in hybrid, that will also run with the internal combustion motor, if required, while charging the battery as well! Plus for the PIH models, the battery is usually far smaller and hopefully far, far cheaper to replace....(just guessing though!).
From Mitsubishi:-
The Outlander PHEV will run for up to 28 miles in pure-electric mode, making it ideally suited for the school run or the work commute. Those with range anxiety need not worry, as when the electric charge is depleted the petrol engine takes over.
I was unable to find out just how many years the battery will last on average though....
I did find this though, but for me, used to getting over 500,000 KMs or more, with a diesel motor that still runs well, even this statement from Mitsubishi stiil did not make the Outlander "attractive":-
INFORMATION ABOUT THE OUTLANDER PHEV BATTERY
https://www.johnscottimitsubishi.ca › ...
WHAT IS THE BATTERY LIFE OF MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV? ... PHEV battery, Mitsubishi has retained this principle and offers a 10-year or 160,000 km warranty.
I wonder just how many people around the world are facing serious financial problems because of this relatively short battery life of EVs?
A friend of mine, drives a company electric Hybrid BMW, and it averages 15 MPG!
In comparison to my old diesel car, which averaged about 47MPG, doing 70MPH on the motorway, and around 25MPG, when pulling a big heavy caravan on the motorway at around 55MPH.....!!
I have no car at the present time, nor do I want one..... My wife has her car, and it does what we need.
