Changing crankset on Urban Mover UM24

Hi,

Am not sure whether this is the correct forum for this question:

I was wondering if it possible to increase the overall speed of the bike when pedalling only. Perhaps by changing the crankset to a larger one?

I'm awaiting for a reply from Urban mover on this but any ideas on this in meantime would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Gearing too low is a perennial problem on small wheel folders, due to the wheel size of course. The best solution is to change the chainwheel to a larger one.

Possible problems are:

1) If you have a one piece chainwheel, you'll need to change to a centre spider and crank with a separate large chainring.

2) You would need to buy a new side guard ring for the larger size.

3) Very large chainrings can be expensive, and added to the new spider etc could boost the cost quite a lot.

4) If you have a pedelec sensor or strain gauge on the chainwheel, replacing the chainwheel would bring problems.

I did similar on my conversion of the Quando to my Q bike, fitting a huge 60 tooth chainring (your present one looks about 46 to 48 tooth):

This chainring/spider etc came from cycle specialists Highpath Engineering

Thanks for your input.

Just got a reply back from urban Mover, reads as follows

The crank set on the UM42 is restricted to 42T and a greater ratio would cause issues with the speed sensor.

However, we are in the process of redesigning the crank system and should have a conversion kit available in the Autumn (prices TBA).

Looks like I'll just have to wait and see

That's even smaller than I thought, difficult to judge behind that guard ring.

The sensors for pedelec/speed etc often cause problems like that, but it's good that they hold out hope for improvement soon.
