How difficult would it be to change the battery and controller on the Schwinn Tailwind or could I just adapt a 24v LIPO to fit the existing controller?

Whats the problem you have? The controller shouldn't need replacing unless its faulty, normal reason to change battery is either is failing or to gain range...

The simplest change would be a more normal battery as fitted to any other 24/26 volt e-bike. You wouldn't need to make any other changes, just connect it, but you will need a new charger to suit the new battery since your present SCiB fast charger isn't suitable.

Beyond that you could fit a new controller as well to give a bit more power, and any controller suitabel for the Tongxin Nano motor will be ok. You do need to determine whether your existing motor is a 3 connection non-Hall sensor one or an 8 connection Hall sensor one, I think it will be the latter.

Be aware that in the higher power uses, the Tongxin motor has often proved unreliable in large wheel applications, and it was that which made the original Schwinn e-bike with the Tongxin motor fail.

Just changing the battery and charger is safe though, but changers are often quite expensive as well as the batteries.

N.B. Just seen NRG's response. The system is set for very low power at present to suit the SCiB battery.
