Just had the usual kerfuffle changing a broken rear wheel spoke.
Has anybody ever considered making the 'J' end detachable?
It could be threaded, perhaps an inch or so long, fitted into the hole which the broken spoke has vacated, then all you would need is a straight spoke, threaded at both ends.
No need to remove wheel, tyre, tube, electric connections.

Sounds like you are re-inventing the spoke Mike... :D

You didn't put freewheel in the above list of things to remove so lucky you! It was the front wheel.

Not re-inventing because I think that I saw something like this years ago on a vintage car.
I seem to remember that the flange that held the 'J' end was turned through 90 degrees and the spoke were 'T' ended.
You would only need a narrow slot to feed the spoke sideways into the hole, even on the cassette side.
But as an emergency repair, I think that pre made 'J' ends would do the trick.
