May 24, 20196 yr I had a new chain (Sram PC1110) fitted to my 11 speed Cube Reaction Race ebike in the middle of February, and its now showing 0.5% wear, which according to the Park Tool chain checker guide means my chain should be replaced. I ride about 200 miles per month, so in the three months since i've had this chain I've probably covered 600 miles. Does this sound about right as I expected it to last longer?
May 24, 20196 yr i used these when i had 11spd https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/sram-x1-11-speed-chain/rp-prod122544
May 24, 20196 yr Author How come some 11 speed chains have more links than others? The one fitted to my bike is 120 links, I see the one you posted has 118 links, and I've also seen 11 speed chains with 114? Infact, I bought a 114 ink chain my mistake and when fitting it today and it just doesn't fit right, the chain touches itself as in the photo below, I can only assume it is to long? (Although when holding it up against the chain I removed they were both the same length) Edited May 24, 20196 yr by The Bear
May 24, 20196 yr Author depends what size front chain ring you have Ok, thanks. So is there a way of working out which size chain is needed? When my bike shop fitted one for me the receipt said it was a Sram PC1110 120 link. The replacement I bought by mistake has 114 links but appears to be to long (see photo above).
May 24, 20196 yr it is what you use the chain tool for and remove links you dont need and yeah it is to long prob why it is knackered.

May 24, 20196 yr then you need to take out id say 2 links other wise it will just flap about otherwise.
May 24, 20196 yr Author Thanks, obviously the 120 link chain had some links removed . I'll get myself a chain link tool. Any suggestions for a good one? Edited May 24, 20196 yr by The Bear

May 24, 20196 yr Thanks, obviously the bike shop got a 120 link chain and removed some links. I'll get myself a chain link tool. Any suggestions for a good one? Bike shops have chains on rolls, so it is unlikely they ever actually count the links, just set them up big ring to largest sprocket on the rear.

May 24, 20196 yr id not be taking my bike back to a shop that does work like that lol. All bike shops do that. obviously you won't be going to any.
May 24, 20196 yr so you think a chain that is to long is fine then there is no tension on that rear mech at all thus the clutch is doing nothing and looks like the chain is rubbing on the top jockey wheel as well.

Of course not, chains are set up so they don't lock up in the extreme big to big and that wasn't fitted by a bike shop remember.

If your not doing off road riding, you could consider converting to an 8 speed. I did it on my 10 speed Pro Connect. Being a stronger chain, it lasts longer and is much cheaper to replace. I’ve always found the 8 speed to be easier to set up too and perfect for commuting.

The problem is, I use all eleven of my gears on my commute. Gear eleven on the flats (and I could do with a higher gear) and sometimes all the way down to gear one when riding up the steep hills on my daily commute....
May 25, 20196 yr Author Just taken my new chain off and hung it from a nail on a length of timber, and SW is correct, it's two links longer than the one its replaced. I had previously measured it top of a flat bench and they both looked the same length, but obviously not. Got a chain link tool arriving today so I'll remove two links and refit it.
May 25, 20196 yr Check your chain length again using the instructions given by the late, great Sheldon Brown. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html#chain
May 25, 20196 yr you can fit 12spd if you wanted it as nx fits on the normal free hub that you have. https://www.mantel.com/uk/sram-nx-eagle-upgrade-kit-groupset&utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping?gclid=Cj0KCQjwz6PnBRCPARIsANOtCw2B6kmeUjhH-AyWjXZMC5WWY39S4-0GzGXr7dH6JeWO-Gucpo2VpEwaAnozEALw_wcB

Hi Bear, The 11 speed and 8 speed have the same 11t high gear and I would be surprised if a 34t low gear wouldn’t be sufficient on most electric bikes. Still I guess the larger steps between the gears wouldn’t suit everyone.

(Although when holding it up against the chain I removed they were both the same length) I believe I might see your problems. But guessing a little. Firstly, you need to count the length of the chain by links. Not by any other type of measuring. Naturally the size of the link, both width and length need to be noted. The one in your photo is far too long. Next, I see no motor, so you either have a front hub or a middle motor like Bosch. If a middle motor, remember that not only your pedal power goes through the chain, but also motor powers as well, so do not expect a long life for the chain, even when correctly adjusted. Furthermore, there are some cheap chains that should not be bought, but some bike shops still fit them......and charge for a good chain! But they are SO simple to install, with a few simple cheap tools, get someone to show you how and buy the tools..... May 26, 20196 yr Author Well after cutting the new chain to the same size as the old one (same number of links as the old one, both hung up together from a nail in the wall and both the same size), its still not right. It's noisy, with a horrible metal on metal sound as if its catching somewhere, and i'm getting constant chain suck. So have I fitted the wrong chain completely? How can I tell if its the wrong chain, as it looks identical to the one i took off. The receipt for the old one said Sram PC1130 11 speed 120 link, and the new one is the same. Or, has my cassette worn so much that it needs replacing also? I've refitted the old chain back on for now, but I just can't see what could be wrong with the new one?? Heres the new chain at the front... New chain at the rear... Edited May 26, 20196 yr by The Bear
May 26, 20196 yr The SRAM PC 1130 11 Speed Chain is the only chain recommended for the SRAM Rival 22 groupset. so it is a road bike chain and not for mtb.

The receipt for the chain that the bike shop fitted states Sram PC1130, which is why a bought another one. Perhaps they just scanned the barcode of one of these for a price, yet fitted a different chain entirely?
