Chain Length?

I am about to replace the front ring and chain-ring on a Bosch emtb , but not the cassette, mostly cos its a bit pricey and it doesn't look worn. The original is a 17T and I am replacing with a 15T thinking that as most of my miles are done at 16mph ish using one of two gears the smaller ring will use a different two at the same speed so will lengthen the life of the cassette.. Hopefully!
Anyways, right or wrong that is what I am doing...
Normally for a chain change I just lay them side by side and cut the new to suit the old, but by going down two teeth do I need to make the chain any shorter or will the 2T difference not be noticeable?
I tend to think it will be ok.. just not sure.

It will probably be ok at the same length, but since you have to part it, you might as well take out that one extra link and have it right.
