Post away, his number plate is open for everyone too see so you can post a video of it on you tube, if he asks for it to be taken down then you might enter grey territory :)

Is it possible to trace someone who has posted on youtube?
Depends how you login to youtube, some people use their google account to login so you could be traced via posts you make on google + or linked Facebook accounts, but I would imagine your IP address is not available to the public.

Post the video up and let us watch it, we will tell you if it's worth going to the police :)

If you don't want to put it on youtube I wouldn't mind hosting it for you.

Don't expect a lot from the cops, they don't like being presented with evidence because they see it as an ignorant member of the public telling them how to do their job.

If you do contact them, use a bit of reverse psychology:

"This video is probably a load of rubbish and not worth investigating."

Likely reply: "We will be the judge of that, mate."

It is a very common practice and as the more experienced videoing cyclists know they are responded to. You can check out your local Police district's website to see if there is an online reporting option. You can link to YouTube then.

You shouldn't send the full video in anyway or upload it YouTube. You only need about 30 seconds before hand showing your riding and then the incident itself and any follow-up. Here is a recent sample of what I mean:

BTW I decided not to bother reporting this even though it is an offence. Had it been a closer I would have, but the video illustrates how to show your riding before hand etc.

You can also make the video private or able to be only viewed by those who have the link. Just share the link with the Police. If they want the full video (keep it for now) you can easily burn it to a DVD and hand it in.

Also check out the likes of the Croydon Cyclist (CycleGaz) for examples of his work and experiences. A couple of well known cyclists using cameras are CyclingMikey and Veloevol

So this is all police officers is it? No police officer in the country will consider any evidence of an offence which is presented to them by any member of the public? Personally, I've not made a report to the police for a long time, but I never knew that they had stopped accepting evidence. Is this a recent decision?

In my naivety I thought that the police based their decision on the usefulness of such evidence as that mentioned above using the following factors: clarity of footage, nature of offence, likelihood of identifying the vehicle, likelihood of identifying the driver, actions of the complainant being a contributory factor and whether it is in the public interest to pursue an investigation or prosecution.

I realise that the decision not to investigate or prosecute must be disappointing and frustrating for the person involved, especially if they have had a fright and a perceived brush with death at the hands of a looney. But I had no idea that the police had actually started rejecting evidence.

I know that in the case of Members of Parliament the law is different, but does the police's rejection of evidence extend to other offences? For example, if I steal a car from the Toyota garage up the road, will they let me keep it?

I recently was successful in having action taken against a driver using video evdence. I did not post on youtube however. What you can do is upload your video to dropbox or take advantage of Outlook Express's online storage space. Then send a link to the video via email. The only problem I had was that not all people are savey enough to find which veiwer will open certain file extensions. If you know which one works well for your video, include that info in the body of your email.

If you are getting no joy from whom you are reporting obvious dangerous driving to (either the employer or police) send the video to your local newspaper or local tv news affiliate along with details of how your complaint has stalled. Even mentioning that this is an option for you to those dragging their feet will sometimes get the ball rolling. Good luck. These drivers need to be named and shamed. The more drivers think that cyclist always video record their rides the safer we will be.

Use windows movie maker to shorten the clip to just show the incident, upload the clip to you tube and call 101 to report the bad driving - tell them the url of the video.

I'm sorry but that's a load of rubbish. My local police have followed up on a few incidents I've let them know about, even patrolling my kids school in the am for a couple of weeks after I emailed them pics of people parking on the zigzags/double yellows outside the school. They've always been very responsive and helpful.

Thanks guyz

Actually I even know where the driver lives as this happened when the driver wanted to park his/her car doing a reverse on the cycle lane without checking behind.

I don't know how serious this incident is, but before going public with your video remember that putting it in the public arena before a prosecution has taken place could make it inadmissible as evidence.

If its only a trivial happening, it scarcely matters.

ps, I had to smile at your opening sentence, "Finally it happened." It sounded like since buying your camera you have been waiting for something to run into you so that you could catch it on film.

I'm sure that isn't the case and I hope you weren't hurt.

I wonder how many cyclists would be prosecuted if drivers had cameras....
It's about time we all had respect for each other.
Motorists get equally annoyed seeing cyclists coming out in the road without warning, jumping red lights, ignoring signs.
One thing that annoyed me was seeing a bunch of cyclists taking up the road then having the cheek to record drivers behaviour to their own selfish behaviour....
Handbags at dawn...
If cyclists want respect ALL of us need to set an example.
Amazes me how no training is ever provided yet a dangerous cyclist can be allowed on the road without any Road sense.

I think the word you might be looking for here is Tolerance.. When reviewing some of my own camera incidents I find that things are not as cut and dried as I thought at the time, and my own exemplary riding might actually be questionable!! I also think that if you ride aggressively in traffic you will get a similarly aggressive response from those around you. I am a big fan of tolerance!
