Carrera impel im-3 Derestric

Just got a Carrera impel im-3 e-bike from Halfords. Anyone know how to derestrict the speed? Have looked around the web but can't find anything?

The Impel range is too new. More to the point, the Hyena electrical system it uses is too new, being totally different from anything Halfords or AFAIK any other maker has used before.

Halfords have been pretty clever at foxing those wanting to crack speed limits in the past. Having glanced through the Impel Manual, my guess is they've been just as clever with this new system.

If you want to give it a try, you can try holding down two or more buttons together for a few seconds and see if any Program Menus pop up on screen. Or else there may be something in the Bluetooth app, but unlikely IMHO.

In the past with Halfords usual Carrera Suntour systems, owners have resorted to upgrading almost all the electrics for extra speed (among other reasons).

If you do manage to up the restricted assist level, be prepared for reduced range from your battery.

People ride ebikes for many different reasons - for me, I wanted to recover some level of fitness after a period of 'downtime' and so I having been putting increasing effort into my cycling.

I started off with a 45kph cut-off - I noticed whilst riding with a buddy (of similar fitness) whose cut-off is at the 25kph point, that he had no difficulty in maintain speed with me over 25kph. The difference was of course that at 26kph+ I was still using battery whilst he wasn't - after a short while of riding my fitness improved and I went back to the 25kph limit and my battery range increased by at least 15%.

Each to their own of course.

So I have figured out the the controller is a Hyena DU-B250 on my Carrera iMPEL 3. I have also found out that you can derestrict it with the Hyena Service Tool software but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Anyone know where I can download it? I did manually get into some back door software on the controller by clumsily fumbling with different key combinations but have been unable to since?

Like Bosh and Yamaha et al, you will need to be a verified dealer to access the service tools.

The new laws already in force no make it unlawful to withold service information from the end consumer.
This stems from an EU directive on waste management that the UK has signed up to and has introduced its own legislation. The main points of this new legislation are:

  1. To ensure all electronic equipment and white goods casings and screw types are manufactured in such a way as to make easy access to components for the end consumer.
  2. To make all service information readily available to the end consumer
  3. To remove the manufacturer's right to set an arbitrary time limit on warranty periods, after 12 months a pro-rata warranty is to be introduced ending at a 10 year time cut-off.
  4. To mandate in law a 10 year minimum spare parts availability for all electronic equipment and white goods.
The EU directive and UK enactment of this new legislation is designed to reduce the vast amounts of electronic and white goods waste throughout the system. The era of the throwaway society is now drawing to a timely end.​

I doubt that means software and programming details, also tell that to likes of Bosh et al regards spare parts for engines etc,etc. They simply don't supply spares to the public nor can they be bought, even the dealers aren't allowed to carry out repairs.

The same thing happened to me in Australia. In about 1995 I had a standard panasonic vcr modified by an American company to make it into a time-lapse recorder land on my bench for repair.

I asked the USA company for a schematic and got a terse response saying it was proprietary design and they would not supply it. My client was Ansett Australia, so I handballed it to them and they got their lawyers onto it.
I had the circuits within a couple of days. Legislation had been passed in Australia outlawing the practice of witholding information on any product sold within their territory.
In with the circuits was a little note saying that company would be withdrawing from the Australian market. Boo hoo.

The EU don't f*ck about with their directives on environmental stuff, they will ensure Bosch and any other EU company falls into line with the laws.

Well Bosh don't supply parts for motor repairs to the end user, except for the crank bearing seal kit.

problem is most of the time it is the bms or a short on the motor controller chips that goes wrong and needs replacing, problem is they will never give you the software to re programme the chips again to make them work and they will never give you that so even if you forced them to give you the chip it is useless without the software.

you can buy 2 iphones change the screens over and they wont work because they now pair the parts to each phone with software so swapping them over wont work anymore even with real parts.

You guys still don't get it--this legislation changes everything in our world. Hardware and software makes no difference, the intent of the law is what matters especially in a UK court. The EU and UK snuck the laws in under the radar when covid was taking all the attention.
There is no get out even for large corporations, it is the law and they WILL comply or they will be fined punitively until they do.
Watch with interest when the first case comes to court, it will be an interesting ride.

like it or not they will never give you the service software to activate the parts real or fake it must be paired to work.

there argument is ppl will turn there tractors in to dragsters which is bs but bosch could say no because it would mean the speed limit and power settings could be changed and made not uk road legal.

and you cant fix a batt because it will explode and burn your house down but with the new bosch power tube batts there made in such a way the only way to get the cells out is to destroy the batt anyway and then the bms locks and game over as the chip looses power and the data on the chip has gone and needs reprogramming to work again.

i cant see this changing any time soon and plenty of bosch and other batts are now in land fill.

This primary legislation will take precedence over things like the EULA which it now now supersedes. Software/firmware will be placed in the same basket as all the other components of the item, as I previously stated, the courts interpret the intent of the law as Parliament intended, so software will be treated just like nuts and bolts, motors etc.
We'll just have to wait and see the first cases won't we?

There seems to be some confusion here:

Hyena DO make the parts available to fix the OP's bike. The Dealer software is a Dealer tool to help fix the bike. It's a standalone product the OP didn't buy and thus has no entitlement to it. If Hyena were forced by law to sell it to end users, there's nothing in legislation that determines that the price has to be either reasonable or affordable.

In any case, the OP is trying to MODIFY his bike, NOT fix it.

AFAIK, neither the Bosch nor TranzX Dealer Software enables the dealer to alter the top speed (Yamaha I've never seen): AFAIK it's hard coded to comply with local/country-specific laws. There's nothing in the legislation that would compel the developers to change that.

bosch already sells software options like the lock function via there software and tesla does the same thing as the car comes fully loaded but you need to pay per month to unlock them all.

when software is locked to the end user to conform with laws like speed limits you will never get that access as you might get the right to repair but you dont have the right to tamper with something to do something it was not meant to do like go 100mph on a ebike and go 300mph down the motor way in a self driving car.

they will sell me a new speaker or a recone kit, but all i need is the foam surround for the 2 mid range drivers as starting to go after 20 years and many have the same problem.
